Abstract
A dust-filter plant comprises a number of individual filter elements arranged in parallel. In order to see that the dust to be filtered is not passing unimpeded through any of the elements, each element is checked in sequence for the presence of dust on its clean air side. Apparatus for carrying out this checking includes a multi-port rotating switching valve (5) for sampling air from the clean air side of each filter element in turn, and arranged to stop when dust is detected by an associated detector (3), indicating means associated with the switching valve (5) thereby indicating which of the filter elements is defective. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Indication of defective filter elements in filter plants
This invention relates to filter plants which comprise a plurality of filter elements arranged in parallel. Such filter plants will hereinafter be referred to as "of the kind described".
Filter plants of the kind described are commonly used for separating contaminants from both liquids and gases, but particularly for extracting dust from air by arrays of filter bags or pockets.
Such filter plants often incorporate a contaminant detector in their outlets to indicate when the contaminant is flowing unimpeded through a filter element or group of filter elements i.e., when an element or group of elements has failed, possibly due to breakdown of the filter fabric. In ferrous foundries, for instance, certain metallic contaminants would be detected by a magnetic dust detector.
Following an indication of failure of the filter, the faulty element has previously been identified by individually checking each element or group of elements, which is a time-consuming and sometimes unpleasant task. It is an aim of the invention to provide a filter plant of the kind described incorporating an indicator which informs the operator which filter element or elements are to be replaced if and when an element failure occurs.
One aspect of the invention consists in a method of identifying one or more defective filter elements or groups of filter elements in a filter plant of the kind described in which material from the individual outlets of the elements or groups of elements is sequentially sampled, the samples being passed to a contamination detector, each element or group of elements being checked in turn. In this way, the need for separate detectors for each element or group of elements is obviated.
A further aspect of the invention consists in apparatus for identifying one or more defective filter elements in a filter plant of the kind described comprising a contamination detector having an inlet in communication with sampling means arranged sequentially to derive its input from the outputs of each of the filter elements or group of filter elements in turn, and display means operating in connection with the detector and the sampling means adapted to indicate which, if any, of the elements or group of elements permit throughflow of contaminant to the detector. A pump is provided at an outlet of the detector to ensure flow through the apparatus. Such apparatus is particularly suitable for use with filter plants comprising arrays of bag or pocket filters for the separation of dust from air, and in particular dust containing magnetic particles such as is found in a ferrous foundry. In such an application, the detector is preferably a magnetic dust detector of a known type.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a schematic diagram of apparatus according to the invention adapted for installation in the dust filtering plant of a ferrous foundry.
As shown in the drawing, an indicating apparatus shown generally at 1 is connected to the clean air side of individual filter elements (not shown) of a filter plant of the kind shown generally at 2. The clean air side of the filter plant is at slightly negative pressure because of the fan used to maintain flow through the system which includes the filter elements (not shown).
The indicating apparatus comprises a magnetic dust detector 3 fed through a tube 4 by a sampling device in the form of a multi-port motorised switching valve 5. Only nine operative ports are shown, but in practice the number corresponds to the number of filter elements of the plant.
The parts of the switching valve 5 are fed by thin sampling tubes 6 installed in the outlet mouths of each of the filter elements. It is necessary that the suction pressure in the sampling tubes 6 be sufficiently low to overcome the slight negative pressure of the clean air side of the filter plant, and a pump 7 is provided for this purpose.
The air from the filter element under check is drawn by means of the pump 7 through the detector 3 for a fixed period, during which the detector will operate if more than a pre-set amount of magnetic dust is present. The output of the detector 3 is used to stop the rotation of the valve 5 which causes a rotary indicator (not shown) to stop against a mark denoting the identity of the filter element in question.
Those tubes 6 from the filter plant not currently in communication with the detector 3 are left open in an enclosure 8 surrounding the valve 5 which is open to atmosphere through a filter 9.
Because the filter elements are under negative pressure, clean air will be drawn back towards the elements, ensuring that the tubes 6 are kept clean.
The switching valve 5 may be set to any switching speed, but a typical period for complete rotation of a 24-port valve is 26 minutes.
1. A method of identifying one or more defective filter elements or group of filter elements in a filter plant of the kind described in which material from the individual outlets of the elements or group of elements is sequentially sampled, the samples being passed to a contamination detector, each element or group of elements thereby being checked in turn.
2. Apparatus for identifying one or more defective filter elements in a filter plant of the kind described comprising a contamination detector having an inlet in communication with sampling means arranged sequentially to derive its input from the outlets of each of the filter elements or groups of filter elements in turn, and display means operating in conjunction with the detector and the sampling means adapted to indicate which, if any, of the elements or groups of
