Abstract
In a non-rewirable electric plug assembly or other electric connector assembly, the preformed base 1 and cover 11 forming the plug housing are secured together by at least two permanent securing means, each of which is independent of the other and neither of which can be deliberately disengaged without effecting permanent damage to the base and/or cover. Preferably, the base 1 and cover 11 are locked together by a snap fitting 9, 10, 19 and abutting boundary edges 14 of the base and cover are welded together or bonded together by adhesive. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
An improved electric connector assembly
This invention relates to electric connector assemblies of the kind comprising an electric connector whose electric contact or contacts is or are permanently electrically connected to the conductor or conductors of a length of flexible electric cable. The invention is especially, but not exclusively, concerned with electric connector assemblies of this kind in which the electric connector is a three-pin electric plug whose pin terminals are permanently electrically connected to the ends of associated conductors of a length of flexible electric cable, such an electric plug assembly being suitable for use in domestic and similar wiring systems and being generally referred to as a non-rewirable electric plug assembly.
In the one known form of non-rewirable plug assembly, the insulating body of the plug is formed of two separately formed premoulded body parts which are welded or otherwise permanently secured together to form a housing enclosing the electrical connections between the cable conductors and the pin terminals, the housing having in one of its walls an opening for entry of the cable.
A non-rewirable electric plug assembly of this known form has the serious disadvantage that, should the weld or adhesive permanently securing together the two body parts of the insulating housing of the plug fail at the time a user is attempting to remove the plug from a socket oulet, then the cover of the plug body will be removed to expose live metal parts that will be highly dangerous.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved non-rawirable electric connector assembly having a housing formed of two separately formed premoulded body parts permanently secured together in which risk of unintentional separation of the two body parts is substantially eliminated.
According to the invention, in the improved electric connector assembly, two separately formed premoulded body parts forming the connector housing are secured together by at least two permanent securing means, each of which is independent of the other and neither of which can be deliberately disengaged without effecting permanent damage to one or both of the body parts of the housing.
Preferably, one or each body parts has at least one resilient lug which effects a snap engagement behind a step on, or within a recess in, the other body part when boundary edges of the two body parts are in tight interfacial engagement and said abutting boundary edges are welded together or bonded together by means of a suitable adhesive.
Preferably, also, one or each body part has a plurality of resilient lugs mutually spaced around its periphery, each of which effects a snap engagement behind a continuous or discontinuous step on, or within a continuous or discontinuous recess in, the other body part.
It will be appreciated that, should the weld or adhesive securing together the body parts of the housing fail when the connector assembly is being disconnected from another connector with which it is mated, separation of the two body parts of the housing will be prevented by the resilient lug or lugs.
Furthermore, preferably the or each step on or recess in one or each body part to be engaged by a resilient lug on the other body part is located at a position remote from the boundary edge of the body part by which it is carried so that disengagement of the resilient lug or lugs by deliberate insertion of a sharp blade between the tightly abutting boundary edges of the body parts is extremely difficult, if not impossible, without effecting permanent damage to one or each body part.
Where the non-rewirable connector assembly is an electric plug assembly, preferably one of the two body parts carries the plug pins and associated pin terminals and has a plurality of resilient lugs at mutually spaced positions around its periphery, the other body part comprising a cover having on or in, and at positions remotely spaced from the boundary edge of, its peripheral wall steps or recesses for engagement by the resilient lugs of the other body part.
The invention is further illustrated by a description, by way of example, of a preferred non-rewirable 1 3A electric plug assembly with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing which shows an exploded view of the electric plug assembly.
Referring to the drawing, the non-rewirable 1 3A electric plug assembly comprises a premoulded plug base 1 having, integral with the base, one part 2 of a cable entry and a premoulded cover 11 having, integral with the cover, one part 1 2 of the cable entry.
Protruding through holes in the plug base 1, are live plug pin 3, neutral plug pin 4 and earth plug pin 5, and, housed in a fuse recess 6 in the base 1, are two resilient fuse contacts 7 and 8 for reception of a cartridge fuse F which will usually be supported on a fuse carrier (not shown) of electrically insulating material which, when the fuse is gripped in the fuse contacts, is a loose fit in the recess 6.
The fuse contact 7 is electrically connected to the live plug pin 3. The live conductor of a flexible wiring cable C is permanently connected to the fuse contact 8, the neutral conductor of the cable is permanently connected to the neutral pin 4 and the earth conductor of the cable is permanently connected to the earth pin 5. Upstanding from the upper surface of the base 1 are six resilient lugs 9 which are mutually spaced around the periphery of the base and each of which has a shoulder 10.
The premoulded cover 11 has mutually spaced around its peripheral wall 13, and at a position remote from the boundary edge 14 of the wall, six steps 19.
When the base 1 and cover 11 of the electric plug assembly are permanently secured together, the shoulder 10 on each resilient lug 9 effects a snap engagement behind the associated step 1 9 on the cover, and the boundary edge 1 4 of the peripheral wall 1 3 and the boundary edge of the part 1 2 of the cover are in tight inter-facial engagement with and are welded to the boundary edges of the base 1 and of the part 2 of the base.
It will be appreciated that the welded boundary edges of the body and cover and the inter-engaging resilent lugs and steps on the body and cover are independent of one another and neither can be deliberately disengaged without effecting permanent damage to one or both of the base and cover of the plug assembly.
