Abstract

A device for dispensing, for example, powdered substances from a container comprises an annular housing 12 mounted on the neck of the container 13 and a dispensing ball 10 mounted captive in the housing for universal rolling movement and having depressions 11 in its surface. The housing has internal bearing surfaces 14, 15 for locating the ball 10 and bearing surface 15 is abutted by the ball in normal use of the device and prevent displacement of the ball towards the interior of the container. Thus, when the container is inverted, rolling movement of the ball transports in the depressions the substance to be dispensed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to dispensing devices This invention relates to dispensing devices and has a particularly useful but not exclusive application in applicators for dispensing powdered substances from a portable container and applying them to a surface.
According to this invention there is provided a dispensing device comprising a housing part adapted to be mounted on the mouth of a container and a ball held captive by bearing surfaces which are formed in the housing part and which allow the ball to roll in all directions in contact with the bearing surfaces, said bearing surface including a rigid bearing surface against which the ball abuts in normal use, and the ball having a multiplicity of depressions in its spherical surface and having its surface exposed at opposite axial sides of the housing part whereby rolling movement of the ball conveys fluid material deposited in the depressions at one axial side of the housing part to the other side of the housing part.
The depressions may conveniently be saucershaped and may for example be part-spherical.
There will now be described in more detail a dispensing device according to the invention. The description makes reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing, which is in axial section.
Referring to the drawing, a ball 10, which is conveniently moulded from a plastics material, is generally spherical but is formed with a multiplicity of evenly-spaced depressions 11 over its surface, in the general manner of a golf ball.
The depressions are in this instance saucershaped, for example part-spherical, but alternative shapes of depressions may be employed if desired. The ball is held captive in a moulded plastics housing 12 in the manner commonly employed in applicators for depilatory and antiperspirant fluids so as to be capable of universal rolling movement. That is to say that the housing provides two annular bearing surfaces 14, 1 5 spaced apart and serving jointly to support the ball over an equatorial zone thereof. The bearing surface 1 5 provides a rigid surface against which the ball abuts in normal use and which thus prevents the ball from being displaced in a direction into a container 13 on which the housing is secured. When the housing is secured over the mouth of a container containing for example a powdered material, the material can be spread over a surface by inverting the container and rolling the ball in contact with the surface, the powdered material being carried through the housing in the depressions in the ball at substantially a constant rate in relation to the distance rolled. The depressions may be of such a size in relation to the portion of the ball which is in sliding contact with the housing that in all rest positions of the ball and spherical surface of the ball between the depressions forms in conjunction with its housing a continuous barrier to the flow of the material to be dispensed. The depressions may thus have a diameter which is smaller than the effective width of the two annular bearing surfaces 14, 1 5.
In the illustrated construction the bearing surfaces viewed in axial section extend substantially tangentially to the ball at the point of bearing contact.
Claims
1. A dispsensing device comprising a housing part adapted to be mounted on the mouth of a container and a ball held captive by bearing surfaces which are formed in the housing part and which allow the ball to roll in all directions in contact with the bearing surfaces, said bearing surface including a rigid bearing surface against which the ball abuts in normal use, and the ball having a multiplicity of depressoins in its spherical surface and having its surface exposed at opposite axial sides of the housing part whereby rolling movement of the ball conveys fluid deposited in the depressions at one axial side of the housing part to the other side of the housing part.
2. A dispensing device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the depressions are saucer-shaped.
3. A dispensing device as claimed in claim 2 wherein the depressions are part-spherical.
4. A dispensing device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
