Abstract
Metallic cladding may be desirable on surfaces of concrete or other structures. A sheet material for effecting such cladding comprises a substrate of fibrous material and/or foamed plastics material with a metallic membrane bonded to one surface and impregnated from its other surface with a cementitious composition reactive with water to form a set mass. The metallic membrane may be a metal foil, for example of copper, or a membrane of non-metallic material such as a silicone rubber composition in which is intimately mixed a proportion of metal powder particles, for example of copper. A structure may be clad by wetting the cementitious composition of the sheet material and applying it to the surface of the structure. A concrete structure with a metallic-clad surface may be produced by lining a mould with the sheet material with the cementitious composition innermost and pouring wet concrete into the mould.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Metallic cladding of concrete and other structures
Metallic cladding may be desirable on surfaces of concrete or other materials used in building and construction, for example to provide protection or decoration.
In our Patent Specification No. 1,504,214 there is described a water-activatable tape for construction purposes which comprises a substrate of fibrous material or of foamed plastics material impregnated with a water-reactive cementitious composition which is reactive with water to form a set mass. In use, such a tape is thoroughly wetted and pressed on a surface to be protected. On setting, the cementitious composition adheres to the surface, forming a protective coating reinforced by the fibrous or foamed substrate. The Specification includes several examples of fibrous and foamed substrates and of cementitious compositions.
In our Patent Specification No. 2,030,059A there is described a water-activatable cement web which comprises a substrate of fibrous material or foamed plastics material which is partially impregnated with a cementitious composition of a like kind and a water-impermeable membrane adhered to the substrate in the region which is substantially free from cement. Specifically, a web is impregnated from one surface throughout a part of its thickness and the water-impermeable membrane is adhered to its other surface. In that Specification we described a bituminous composition for coating on that other surface to produce a water-impermeable membrane with a tacky outer surface to which a final decorative layer could be bonded by pressure. We also described how such a web could be used for producing water-proofed foundations for buildings by sticking the web to the inside of concrete shuttering by its tacky surface and then filling the shuttering with wet concrete. The water in the concrete would activate the cementitious composition to bond the web securely to the concrete on setting. The tacky surface of the membrane would part from the shuttering, leaving a concrete structure with a securely bonded waterproof coating.
According to this invention a sheet material for metallic-cladding concrete or other structures comprises a substrate of fibrous material and/or foamed plastics material having bonded to one surface a metallic membrane, the substrate being impregnated at least partially from its other surface with a cementitious composition which is reactive with water to form a set mass.
Further, according to the invention, a method of metallic-cladding a concrete or other structure comprises wetting the cementitious composition of a sheet material as just described, applying it to a surface of the structure to be clad and allowing the cementitious composition to set.
According to a further feature of the invention a method of producing a moulded concrete structure with a metallic-clad surface comprises lining a mould with a sheet material as just described, with the metallic membrane against at least a part of the interior surface of the mould, and filling the mould with wet concrete.
The invention includes moulded concrete structures having metallic-clad surfaces produced by these methods.
In the latter method, the water in the wet concrete activates the cementitious composition which becomes bonded to the concrete on setting.
The metallic membrane may be a metal foil or a membrane incorporating metal powder particles.
Metallic foils may, for example, be of stainless steel, copper, lead, aluminium or metal alloys and may have a polymer film laminated to the surface opposite to that bonded to the substrate.
For protection of marine structures against fouling the metallic membrane may be or incorporate copper or a copper alloy. Examples of alloys known to resist fouling by marine organisms are:- (a) Copper 86.75% (b) Copper 68.75%
Nickel 10.0% Nickel 30.38%
Iron 1.25% Iron 0.52%
Manganese 1.0% Manganese 0,41% Zinc 1,0% Zinc 0.10% Lead 0.005O,4 Phosphorus 0.01% A concrete boat hull with anti-fouling metallic cladding may be produced by lining at least part of the mould which is to form the part of the hull in the region of the water-line with the sheet material.
The fibrous or foamed substrate and the cementitious composition may be selected from amongst the materials exemplified in our said Specification No. 1,504,214.
One example of a metallic membrane which may be utilised in the invention is a sheet of a silicone rubber composition in which is intimately mixed 25 per cent by weight of metal powder particles. A metallic membrane for the protection of marine structures against fouling may comprises 25 per cent by weight of particles of one of the aforesaid alloys (a) or (b) incorporated by mixing in a silicone rubber composition as follows:- SILOPREN E 50 (Organopolysiloxane polymer) 45.4
SILOPREN W 1000 (Organopolysiloxane oil) 20.8
SILOPREN Crosslinking Agent AC 3095 6.0
(believed to be an oxime type)
AEROSIL R 972 (Fine silica filler) 5.5
OMYA BL R 3 (Calcium carbonate filler) 19
Dibutyl Tin Diacetate (Catalyst) 0.03
SILOPREN Fungicide 3087 (Biocide) 0.8
(SILOPREN, AEROSIL and OMYA are Registered Trade Marks).
This composition is a moisture-curable liquid which conveniently may be coated on the nonimpregnated surface of the substrate.
For bonding a metallic foil to the substrate, the substrate may be coated with an adhesive layer such as the aforesaid bituminous composition described in Specification No. 2,030,059A and the metallic foil may be adhered to the tacky surface thereof.
