Abstract
210,612. Lucy, A. W. Jan. 17, 1923. Angle-measuring instruments; clinometers.-An instrument of the type in which sights B, Care provided to define the line from the observer to a distant object, and in which a mirror E attached to an arm moving over a graduated scale D is adjustable about a central axis F to reflect a second object to the observer's eye, is adapted for use as a clinometer by the provision of a member H mounted to hang freely from the axis F, such member carrying a sighting line H<1> which, in conjunction with an axial line on the mirror, serves to define a vertical datum plane. To enable the observer to maintain the direct and reflected sighting lines in a vertical plane the member H may carry a spirit level arranged to be observed bv reflection in the mirror during the sighting. The instrument may be provided with a straight edge for use as an alidade. The instrument may also be enclosed and may be provided with fixed mirrors for deflecting the direct sighting line, thus decreasing the distance between the sights.
