Abstract

The invention relates to a lockable handle device 1 which has a lock (not shown) in a seating 4 and a nib 2 for securing the device in a fully closed position and a nib 7 for securing the device in a ventilating position, the nib 7 being secured to the nib 2 by a rivet 10 defining a pivot axis about which the whole device can turn. The lock can lock the device in the fully closed and ventilating position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Lockable handle device for a casement closure Technical field of the invention The invention relates to a lockable handle device for a casement closure, particularly a casement closure of the kind which is securable by engagement of a nib of the handle device with a keeper of the frame in which the closure device opens and closes when the handle device is pivoted about a pivot axis of the handle device.
Background art Proposed lockable handle devices are effective in preventing or hindering unauthorised entry into a building for example through a casement closure to which they are fitted. Such handle devices generally permit locking of the casement closure in one of a variety of open positions in which the nib is clear of the keeper and a fully closed or locked condition when the nib and keeper engage. However, it is often desirable to hold the closure in an intermediate or ventilating position in which the closure is nevertheless locked against unauthorised entry. Proposed handles do not provide this facility.
Disclosure of the invention It is an object if the invention to seek to mitigate this disadvantage of the prior art.
According to the invention there is provided a lockable handle device for a casement closure, which is securable by engagement of a nib of the handle device with a keeper of the frame in which the closure opens and closes when the handle device is pivoted about a pivot axis of the handle device, comprising a lock positioned in a part of the handle device between a hand grip part and the pivot axis, and a further nib having a locking face spaced from the first - mentioned nib for engagement with the keeper so that the closure is partially open and can be locked in that position.
The further nib may be secured to the handle device by securing means through which the pivot axis extends. This construction provides a compact structure.
The first - mentioned nib and the further nib may be superposed and secured together by the securing means which may be a rivet. This is a relatively simple yet inexpensive construction which combines both mounting and pivoting of the nibs.
Lockable handle devices for a casement closure are hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Brief description of the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view from above, one side and one end of a left hand handle; Figure 2 is a front elevational view of a right hand handle; and Figure 3 is a side elevational exploded view of part ofthe handles of Figure 1 and Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, in which like parts are indicated by like numerals Figure 1 shows a left hand lockable handle device 1 for a casement closure, which is securable by engagement of a nib 2 of the handle device 1 with a keeper (not shown) of the frame (also not shown) in which the closure to which the handle device is secured opens and closes when the handle device is pivoted about a pivot axis 3 of the handle device. There is a lock (not shown for clarity) positioned in a seating 4 in an enlarged part 5 of the handle device 1 between a hand grip part 6 and the pivot axis 3.
There is also a further nib 7 having a locking face 8 spaced from the first - mentioned nib 2. The nib 7 is part of a separate pad or catch 9 which is in the embodiments shown superposed on the first mentioned nib 2, the nibs being secured together by securing means in the form of a rivet 10 through which the pivot axis 3 extends and by which the whole handle device 1 is mounted for pivotal movement on and with respect to an escutcheon plate (not shown) which is secured to part of the closure.
The lock is a key - operated barrel lock of the kind which is turnable by the key to throw a locking bar so that that bar engages in a slot in the escutcheon plate.
In operation, the escutcheon plate is secured to part of the closure and when the first - mentioned nib 2 is engaged with the keeper, and the key is turned in the lock, the lockable handle device 1 is locked because the locking bar is engaged in the slot and the handle device 1 cannot be pivoted about the pivot axis 3.
If the lock is unlocked so that the locking bar is withdrawn from the slot, the handle device 1 can, when the hand grip part 6 is gripped, be pivoted about the pivot axis 3, (rivet 10,) and the closure can be opened.
If it is desired to open the closure in an intermediate position for ventilation, particularly where the closure is a window or French window, the lockable handle device 1 is pivoted and the keeper is engaged in the space 11 between the upper (as viewed) face of the first - mentioned nib 2 and the locking face 8 of the further nib 7.
The lock is again turned by the key so that the locking bar is thrown to engage the slot, and the closure is locked in a partially open ventilated, condition but is nevertheless secure against unauthorised entry.
The handle device 1 shown in Fig. 2 is identical to that of Fig. 1, except that it is a right hand handle, in other words the hand grip part 6 projects to the right as viewed instead of to the left.
It will be understood that the handle device 1 embodying the invention above described and shown in the drawings may be modified. For example, the further nib 7 may not be a separate part secured to the nib, rather the handle device may be made as one integral unit. However, the two nibs 2 and 7 are still on the pivot axis 3. Also, the lock may be a key operated spring mounted slidable barrel lock. Also, the lock may not lock the device in the ventilating position. Further the nib 7 may be readily added to an existing handle device so modifying that handle device to have both nibs 2 and 7.
