Abstract
A securing device for a door, window or the like comprises two plungers at the ends of bars 14 which are movable outwardly or inwardly by handle 32. A stop 26 is mounted on the door surround and a recess is provided in the floor. The door can be partly opened to a position in which the plungers engage the stop and an edge of the recess, and on turning the handle the plungers are withdrawn to enable the door to be fully opened. The plungers are biassed outwardly by springs and the recess is covered by spring plate 29 to prevent ingress of dirt. Handle 32 also operates a door latch 33 and is preferably combined with a door lock. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to securing devices
This invention relates to securing devices.
According to this invention a securing device for a door, window or like openable structure comprises an element and a cooperable stop positioned in use so that in a partly open position of the door the element engages the stop to prevent further opening of the door, and means operable to move the element to permit said further opening of the door.
Preferably the element is spring-loaded.
The element may be a plunger and said stop may be formed on a plate. The stop may be an edge of a recess in a floor.
The element may be mounted on the door or the like.
The operable means may comprise a handle connected to the element by a bar.
The door or the like may have two said elements respectively cooperable with two stops, with a common said operable means.
The invention also includes a said device secured on a door or the like and surround.
The operable means may include a lock for the door or the like.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a door securing device in position; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the device.
A door 10 is hinged at 11 at one side to a door surround 12. A door securing device 13 is secured near the opposite side of the door. Two upright bars 14 are slidable in brackets 1 5 secured to the door face 1 6. The bars and associated parts are generally similar. At their upper or lower end respectively the bars are received in a housing 1 7 secured to the door and including a plunger 18 biassed upwardly or downwardly respectively by a spring 1 9 connected to the bar and the plunger.
Secured to the door surround near the top edge of the door is a lintel plate 20 having a vertical flange 21 secured by coach screws or coach bolts 22 to the door surround and a flat downwardly facing horizontal surface 23 extending from the flange 21. A portion 24 of the surface is bent upwardly to form downwardly facing surface 25 which extends upwardly as it extends away from the flange 21 and leading to downwardly extending stop shoulder 26. At the bottom, a recess 27 is formed in the floor and a floor plate 28 is secured by screws around the margin of the recess. A flat plate 29 is hinged at 30 to the plate 28 and is normally upwardly biassed by a weak spring 30 to a position flush with the plate 28 to prevent ingress of dirt and dust. A vertical stop flange 31 is located at the side of the recess further from the door.
The inner ends of the bars are connected to a handle 32 which is rotatable to withdraw a door latch 33, and to cause the bars to move downwardly and upwardly respectively. As the door is now opened from the closed position shown in full line in Fig. 2, the top plunger 18 rides on the surface 23 and then on the surface 25, the plunger moving outwardly due to the spring 1 9.
The bottom plunger rides on the plate 29, the spring 1 9 gradually depressing this plate against the spring 30. When the door has been partly opened, to the position shown in chain-dotted line in Fig. 2, the top plunger abuts the stop shoulder 26 and the bottom plunger abuts the stop flange 31. In this position, the person on the inside of the door can see what is outside the door and decide whether to open the door further. If it is desired to fully open the door, the handle 32 is first rotated further to withdraw the top plunger downwardly away from the stop shoulder 26 and the bottom plunger upwardly away from the stop flange 31, and then the door can be opened. To close the door the handle is operated to hold the plungers away from the stop shoulder and flange and the door is brought to the chain-dotted position whereupon the plungers can assume the positions shown and the door then be closed.
The engagement of the plungers with the stop shoulder and the stop flange is such that a considerable force would be required to break the door open.
If desired, an inclined lip 40 may be provided extending upwardly as it extends inwardly from the lower edge of stop shoulder 26 so that as the door is closed the top plunger 19 engages the downwardly facing surface 41 of this lip to progressively depress the plunger without jarring of the mechanism.
Preferably the handle 32 is combined with a lock, controlling the latch 33, and operable by a key from both inside and outside the door, so that the bars can only be moved when the lock is unlocked.
In modifications, a door is provided with only the top bar and associated parts or only the bottom bar and associated parts.
The device may be used with other openable items than doors, for example windows.
It would be possible for the spring loaded plungers and associated parts to be mounted on the door surround and be cooperable with upwardly and downwardly facing suitably shaped lintel plates respectively mounted on the door at the top and bottom of the door.
