Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to pipe joints This invention relates to pipe joints and more particularly to pipe joints of the "butt" kind used for joining in end to end relationship, a number of pipes to form a continuous pipeline. Such pipelines are commonly used as service pipes such as, for example, drains, water mains or sewers.
One common form of such a joint comprises the ends of two pipes located in end to end relationship, an annular resilient sealing member surrounding the abutment between the ends of the two pipes, and a clamp arrangement fitted around the pipe to hold the sealing member in sealing engagement with the pipe ends.
It is understood that by the word "pipes" as used herein, is included any pipe-like members such as pipes, tubes and hoses, and hollow pipe fittings used in pipe work such as elbows and "T" junction members.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an effective and satisfactory pipe joint of the kind mentioned hereinabove.
According to the invention there is provided, a pipe joint comprising adjacent ends of two pipes located in co-axial end to end relationship; an annular sealing member located around the two adjacent pipe ends, and two clamp members each of generally semi-cylindrical configuration fitted around the pipe ends and the sealing member with their adjacent axially extending side-edges secured together; wherein the configuration of the clamping members adjacent their mutually attached side-edges departs approximately tangentially from their general semi-cylindrical configuration, and the sealing member has a correspondingly thickened section adjacent each of the attached side-edges of the clamping members.
In one embodiment of the invention, the clamping members are provided along their sideedges with flanges, securing between the two flange members being provided by means of nuts and bolts associated with the flanges, for example.
In another embodiment of the invention, the clamping members are secured together on one side by the adjacent side-edges on that side being pivotally connected together. The other pair of adjacent side-edges may be provided with flanges, securing between the two flange members being provided by means for example, of a nut and bolt associated with the flanges.
The pivotal connection between the two sideedges may be by means of a hinged connection, but preferably is by means of a hooked engagement arrangement. Thus for example one of the associated side-edges may be provided with a yoke extending parallel to the side-edge from a centrally disposed support, whilst the associated side-edge of the other clamping member is provided with one or more hooks arranged to engage over the yoke.
The pivotable connection between two associated side-edges of the clamping members has the advantage of compactness and facilitates the fitting of the pipe coupling close up to any obstruction in the vicinity of the joint. Thus it is only necessary to ensure sufficient space around the joint to tighten nuts and bolts (for example) on one side of the joint. Similarly the joint, having only one side requiring nut and bolt connection, is quicker to assemble.
The hook and yoke arrangement described hereinabove can be advantageous over the provision of a hinge at the pivotal inter connection between associated side-edges, in that whereas a hinged coupling need to be opened wide before it can be passed around the pipe joint, the hook and yoke arrangement allows one half of the coupling to be positioned and the other portion then connected with minimal opening of the clamping members.
By means of the invention, the sealing member is provided with two generally wedge-shaped portions diametrically opposed to each other adjacent the mutually secured side-edges of the clamping members.
The invention enables a most significant reduction of the difficulty frequency encountered with pipe joints of the kind to which this invention is directed, that the sealing member at the junction between the two clamping members tends to be buckled and reduce its sealing effect upon tightening together of the clamping members. Thus, with the joint of the invention, upon tightening the flanged clamping members together, the wedged portion of the sealing member beneath each flanged abutting edge of the clamping members creates radially inward reaction thereby preventing buckling. At the same time, due to the increased separation from the pipe ends of the clamping members adjacent their mutually abutting edges, there is considerable resistance to entrapment of the sealing member between the adjacent side-edges of the clamping members.
Positive circumferential location of the sealing member relative to the clamping members may be provided by one or more nibs located on the sealing member arranged to engage in a corresponding slot in one or both of the clamping members. Alternatively, positive location may be provided, for example, by means of small locating lugs protruding from the wedge-shaped portions of the sealing member into the gap between the adjacent side edges of the clamping members.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, two embodiments thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:~ Figure 1 is a front sectional end elevation of a pipe joint according to the invention; Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation of part of the joint in Figure 1.
Figures 3 and 4 are scrap front and section views respectively of a portion of the sealing member of the joint in Figure 1; Figure 5 is a front sectional and elevation of another pipe joint according to the invention; and Figure 6 is a scrap exploded isometric view of part of the joint of Figure 5.
Referring now to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that the joint comprises two juxtaposed pipe ends 1 and 2 around which is located an annular sealing gasket 3 of resilient material. It is to be noted that the sealing gasket is provided with an inner annular rib 4 providing separation between the juxtaposed pipe ends 1 and 2 to prevent damage thereto, and is also provided with internal and external annular ribs 5 and 6 for increased sealing effect in use.
Surrounding the annular sealing gasket are two clamping members 7 and 8 which are generally, but not completely, of semi-cylindrical configuration.
The adjacent axially extending side-edges of each of the clamping members are provided with flanges 9 having bores 10 through which securing bolts 11 may be passed, each of which carries an appropriate nut 12.
As mentioned above, it is to be observed that although each cylindrical member is over the majority of its surface of a cylindrical cross section, adjacent each side-edge thereof, it diverges tangentially as shown at 13 and 14 thereby creating a somewhat wedge-shaped region adjacent the flanged edges 9 with the external surfaces of the juxtaposed pipes.
The sealing gasket is similarly wedge-shaped adjacent each of the side-edges of the clamping members as shown at 15 and 16, i.e. is of thickened cross-section at these portions compared to its section elsewhere.
As can be seen from Figure 3 and Figure 4, the sealing gasket is provided with a nib 17 located in a slot (not shown) in one of the clamping members to ensure positive location between the gaskets and the clamping members 7 and 8 to ensure accurate alignment between the wedge portions 15 and 1 6 of the sealing gasket and the corresponding shaped spaces beneath the adjacent side-edges 1 3 and 14 of the clamping members.
In practice it is to be noted that the matching tangential "straight" portions 13 and 14 of the clamping members constrain the gasket 3 and prevent it from being trapped between the flanges 9 of the clamping members. Local buckling is prevented by the inward reaction of the clamping members and by the locally increased thickness of the gasket 3 in the wedge-shaped portions.
Sealing at the areas between the two clamping members is enhanced by the inclined plane effect of the clamping members as they are drawn together. This forces the gasket 3 inwards and tends to equalise the gasket compression around the circumference of the joint.
Referring to Figures 5 and 6 of the drawings it will be seen that the joint comprises of two juxtaposed pipe ends 21 around which is located an annular sealing gasket 23 of resilient material.
Surrounding the annular sealing gasket 23 are two clamping members 27 and 28 which are generally, but not completely, of semi-cylindrical configuration.
The adjacent axially extending side-edges at one side of each of the clamping members are provided with flanges 29 having bores through which a securing bolt 31 may be passed, carrying an appropriate nut 32.
The other axially extending side-edges of the clamping members are provided with a pivotal connection arrangement comprising a yoke 40 carried by a support 41 extending from one sideedge and a pair of hooks 42 extending from the other side-edge.
As mentioned above, it is to be observed that although each clamping member is, over the majority of its surface, of a semi-cylindrical crosssection, adjacent each side-edge thereof it diverges tangentially as shown at 33 and 34 thereby creating a somewhat wedge-shaped region adjacent the side-edges of the clamping members with the external surfaces of the juxtaposed pipes.
The sealing gasket is similarly wedge-shaped adjacent to each of the side-edges of the clamping members as is shown at 35 and 36, i.e. it is of thickened cross-section at these portions compared with its cross-section elsewhere.
In practice it is to be noted that the matching tangential "straight" portions 33 and 34 of the clamping members constrain the gasket 23 and prevent it from being trapped between the sideedges of the clamping members. Local buckling -is prevented by the inward reaction of the clamping members and by the locally increased thickness of the gasket 23 in the wedge-shaped portions.
Sealing at the areas between the two clamping members is enhanced by the inclined plane effect of the clamping members as they are drawn together. This forces the gasket 23 inwards and tends to equalise the gasket compression around the circumference of the joint.
The yoke and hook pivotal connection between the clamping members at one side thereof has the advantages mentioned above. In particular we have found that assembly in a confined space is particularly enhanced with the arrangement illustrated. Thus one clamping member can be placed in position about the sealing gasket and the other half then engaged on the pivotal side of the clamping members by opening the members only by about 150 and with the bolt 31 located in its final position on the other side of the flange members at the same time.
We have found that by means of the provisions of the present invention relatively wide tolerance ranges between the pipes and the clamping members can be accommodated. This feature is to be noted in the context of certain previous known forms of joints of the kind mentioned hereinabove, which do not have the feature, provided by the invention, of a wedge-shaped portion of sealing gasket, but comprise clamping members having entirely or almost entirely a half-cylindrical configuration. In such designs, it has been found that only a very limited tolerance range is possible between pipes and clamping members.
