Abstract

An illuminated display, particularly a festive decoration such as a Christmas tree, formed of printed circuit board to which are attached one or more light emitting diodes. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION nat&commat;d The present invention relates to displays and decorations and in particular to illuminated displays and decorations.
Displays and decorations, particularly festive decorations such as Christmas decoration formed of various materials such as paper or plastics are known. Such decorations may be, for example, in the shape of Christmas trees, Christmas bells or representations of Father Christmas, etc. and they can be three-dimensional or two-dimensional.
Often, it is desirable that such displays and decorations should be illuminated and in that case it is the general practice to string lights, e.g. fairy lights, on or round the display or decoration.
We have sought to provide a display and in particular a festive decoration which incorporates its own form of illumination.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a display shaped from printed circuit board having one or more light emitting diodes attached thereto.
In one embodiment, the present invention provides a festive decoration shaped from painted, printed circuit board having one or more light emitting diodes attached thereto.
If the display is three-dimensional it is preferable that the various parts of the display are shaped from double sided printed circuit boards so that both sides can be provided with light emitting diodes to give a more realistic and pleasing appearance. However, if the display is two-dimensional, i.e. the type to be hung against a wall or is some form of hollow body such as a sphere, only single sided circuit board is used with light emitting diodes attached to only one side of the display.
The printed circuit board can be of any type and in particular, a coppered thermosetting phenolic material.
The printed circuit board may be painted, coloured or finished in some way to give it an attractive or more natural appearance.
The light emitting diodes can be bonded directly to the printed circuit board or if in the form owt lamp bulbs, they may be soldered to the printed circuit board.
The light emitting diodes can emit white or coloured light and the display may incorporate a number of light emitting diodes emitting different coloured lights. The light emitting diodes may be made to flash on and off.
If desired, the light emitting diodes may be covered with plastics material to enhance the decorative effect.
The light emitting diodes may be powered by batteries incorporated in the display or by a separate AC/DC power source.
The illuminated display of the present invention is formed by forming double - or single-sided printed circuit board into the desired shape, painting, colouring or finishing the printed circuit board and-then attaching the light emitting diodes thereto.
The present invention is further illustrated in the accompanying drawing which shows one form of display in accordance with the present invention.
The display shown in the figure is in the form of a three-dimensional Christmas tree shown generally as 1 secured to a base 2. The Christmas tree 2 is formed of a number of branches 3 attached to a central core 4. Each branch 3 is made of double-sided printed circuit board painted to simulate the colour of a fir tree to which a number of differently coloured light emitting diodes 5 have been bonded to the circuit 6 of the printed circuit board. Each light emitting diode 5 is plastic coated and the whole device is painted with dots of white paint to simulate snow.
1. An illuminated display shaped from printed circuit board having one or more light emitting diodes attached thereto.
2. An illuminated display as claimed in Claim 1 in the form of a festive decoration.
3. An illuminated display as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 formed from single-sided printed circuit board.
4. An illuminated display as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 formed from double-sided printed circuit board with light emitting diodes attached to both sides.
5. An illuminated display as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4 wherein the light emitting diodes are bonded directly to the printed circuit board.
6. An illuminated display as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the light emitting diodes are solded to the printed circuit board.
7. An illuminated display claimed in any of claims 1 to 6 wherein the printed circuit board is painted, coloured or has a finish applied thereto.
8. An illuminated display as claimed in any of claims 1 to 8 wherein each light emitting diode emits a light of a different wavelength.
9. An illuminated display substantially as herein described and with reference to the accompanying drawing.
