Abstract
The invention relates to a sealing sheet with an upper layer consisting of an elastomeric material, a strengthening layer consisting of fibres, and a bitumen layer on the underside. The sheet is used for covering parts of buildings and roofs. An additional covering layer made of SBS, on the one hand, and EPDM, IIR or CSM on the other hand, and bitumen, is stuck to the upper layer. The constituents of the mixture for the covering layer have specific limiting values relative to one another.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Sealing sheets for roofs and other parts of buildings
The invention relates to a sealing sheet for roofs and other parts of buildings and consists of an upper layer made of a rubber mixture based on ethylene/propylene/diene polymer, butyl rubber or chlorosulphonated polyethylene, an intercalated strengthening layer made of polyester fibres or glass fibres, and a lower layer made of elasticised bitumen.
Sealing sheets of this kind can be laid on roofs or used for protecting parts of walls which lie in the ground.
The types of rubber mentioned for the upper layer are the customary types. Abbreviations are customary for the abovementioned types of rubber and these are as follows:
EPDM = ethylene/propylene/diene polymer
CSM = chlorosulphonated polyethylene
IRR = butyl rubber; in this case, chlorobutyl and bromobutyl rubber should also be included
EVA = ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer
The intercalated strengthening layers made of fibre material can be woven fabric or non-woven fabric. The elasticised bitumen is a bitumen which has a softening point below 1000C and the viscosity of which is 85/25
Ruk. A composition of this kind is described in detail in Patent Application P 30 42 943.
Sealing sheets of this kind can be laid simply and securely by treating the underside of the sheet with a naked flame when the sheet is laid on the roof or other part of the building. This enables simple and rapid laying and guarantees secure adhesion.
However, in the laying of sheets of this kind, an undesired attendant phenomenon has arisen, which requires careful attention. This particular characteristic is as follows: if the naked flame is not kept at a predetermined distance from the sheet when it is swept over the lower layer, this can have the result that the flame also comes into contact with the upper side of the adjacent sheet which has already been laid. This can lead to damage of the surface of the sheet exposed to the weather. Damage of this kind consists primarily of scorching and hence disintegration of the surface. Although this phenomenon can be avoided without difficulty, it cannot be ruled out if, for example, the work must be carried out particularly rapidly because of the weather, or if the sheet is laid with insufficient care.
The object of the invention is to avoid disadvantages of this kind. It should be ensured that damage to the upper layer of the sealing sheet does not occur, even when the personnel are inexperienced and the work is not carried out with great care.
This object is achieved by placing, on the upper layer, an additional thin thermoplastic covering layer which is interfacially crosslinked to the upper layer and has the following composition: 10 - 90 parts by weight of styrene/butadiene/styrene block copolymer 90 - 10 parts by weight of EPDM, IIR or CSM 30 - 300 parts by weight of bitumen or atactic polypropylene
The said copolymer is a styrene/butadiene/styrene block copolymer. If a covering layer of this type is applied to the upper layer, the sealing sheet is substantially less sensitive to the effect of a naked flame.
Normal carelessness with the naked flame during the laying work can no longer damage the upper layer.
Furthermore, it is advantageous that this additional covering layer leads to improved adhesion to the bitumen, because the superposed layers in contact are in closer proximity to one another. Normally, for the mixture used for the covering layer, the proportions are preferably in the average range. The amounts of
EPDM, lIR or CSM added are advantageously matched to the type of rubber contained in the upper layer.
The covering layer can be further improved by adding up to 20% of EVA. In particular, this leads to greater pliability, so that the laying of the sealing sheet is not made difficult, even in the cold. The covering layer only needs to have a very low density. This can be between 50 and 750 g/m2. This leads to a layer thickness of about 0.01 - 0.2 mm.
The composition of a mixture which can advantageously be used for the said covering layers is given below. This covering layer is applied to the upper layer of the sealing sheet by calendering. The whole assembly is then vulcanised.

The invention is also described, by way of example, in conjunction with a Figure. This Figure shows a cross-section through a sealing sheet. The lower layer 1 essentially consists of a bitumen with a low softening point and with 20% of SBS copolymer added. The amount added can also be lower. The layer 2 consists of a polyester non-woven fabric. The layer 3 represents an upper layer made of an EPDM rubber mixture. The covering layer 4 according to the invention has the composition corresponding to the abovementioned example.
