Abstract
209,166. Barbour, J. H. Oct. 3, 1922. Oil-carrying vessels.-Liquids such as oils immiscible with and lighter than water are stored in ships and other floating bodies within tanks a, Fig. 1, fitted with pipes d extending to the bottom of the tank and in communication with the water of floatation. Pipes f for the inlet and outlet of the oil open into the top of the tank and air escape ducts h are arranged at the corners. All these pipes are fitted with control cocks e, g, i. In operation, as the oil is drawn off its place is taken by water which flows in by way of the duct d. In a modification, a series of tanks are in communication at the top and bottom and single pipes are provided for supply of oil and water. Various devices are employed to prevent water from being drawn from a tank before all the oil has been extracted which is particularly likely to occur if the ship is off an even keel. In one form, the oil outlet pipes are arranged at the four corners of a tank and are inclined upwards and connected to a common oil outlet. In another form, the pipes q, Fig. 7, at each end of a tank are connected to a control box in which works a gravity-actuated valve such as a ball t or flap. In the event of the ship pitching, the necessary control is afforded by a fore and aft pipe q<1> also fitted with a control box. A similar device mav be fitted to the bottom of the device to control the water supply, but in this case the pipes are led in each case to the remote side of the control box. Specifications 2210/05 and 5203/08 are referred to.
