Distilling w a t e r ; separate heater and evaporator apparatus.- In apparatus for distilling water in which the water circulates between a vapour separator 2, and a tubular heater 1, the feedwater is softened to prevent incrustation of the heating - surfaces. The feed-water, mixed with softening-agents such as lime or sodium carbonate in a device 9, falls on to a perforated or notched tray or overflow basin 11 supported in the vapour space, and thence into the circulating current. The water passes down a funnel 5 and upwards round the outside to a pipe 4 leading to the heater. Sediment deposited in the base of the vessel is withdrawn through a trap chamber or by a pump or otherwise.
