Manure and seed distributors.-A machine for drilling seeds and manures in numerous furrows consists of two hoppers, arranged one on each side of the machine, and fitted with a reciprocating measuring-device whence the seed &c. passes to a reciprocating table with a series of grooves of gradually-increasing length, and thence into drill tubes. The depth of each drill is regulated by a wheel which follows it. Fig. 6 shows the reciprocating measuring-device, Figs. 3 and 4 the reciprocating grooved table, and Fig. 2 the drill 22 and the wheel 29 which controls its depth. The seed &c. from the hopper 1 passes through an aperture 11 into a measuring-chamber consisting of upper and lower walls 8, 9, an end wall 4, and a wall 5 adjustable, by means of a screw 6 and handle 7 which may have an indicator showing the quantity of seed &c. passing. The walls 8, 9 of this chamber are reciprocated by a lever 14 pivoted at 15 and oscillated by a cam on one of the land wheels of the machine, so that the seed &c. falls first through the opening 11 and then through the opening 12 into the grooves of the table 20. This is reciprocated by a cam 28, Fig. 3, on the wheel axle, and by a spring 27, and moves on links 23. The ends of the grooves are arranged over the upper ends of the drills 22, Fig. 2. These are made of bent sheet material, and are rotatably mounted on a shaft 30. The roller 29 behind each drill 22 serves to cover in the seed &c., and also, by rising and falling over uneven parts of the ground, controls the depth of the drill. This is effected by a rod 34, adjustable by means of a collar 40, forming with the drill 22, the radius rod 36, and the parts 31, 33 a rectangular frame with a telescopic diagonal 38 fitted with a spiral spring 39. The shaft 30 and part 31 are fixed, and the part 33 is pivoted at 32. The shaft 30 can, however, be turned by a hand-lever to raise the levers 31, and thus withdraw the drills from the ground.
