Abstract

208,291. Brown, G. H. Oct. 14, 1922. Variable-speed belt gearing comprises two belts shifted simultaneously to change speed over two fast-and-loose pulleys 41, 40 and 42, 43 of different diameters upon a shaft 2. The beltforks 7, 8 are carried by blocks 5, 6, which slide on a parallel rod 1 and are normally pressed by springs 23, 24 so that distance screws 5<b>, 6<b> abut against the circular-ended prongs 9 of a shifting fork 22. In the application to an automatic screw machine, the fork 22 is moved to and fro by a cam acting through a rod 18, so that the belts are smited, one belt being always on one of the inner pulleys 41, 42, which are fast. The blocks 5, 6 are connected by a broken toggle 27 operated through a rod 33 and hand lever. To stop the machine, the toggle 27 is straightened, the forks thrust apart, and both belts brought on to the outer pulleys 40, 43, which are loose.
