Locks, permutation.-In a permutation lock in which a bolt is blocked by a pivoted member which can only be rocked clear of a pivoted spring pawl on the bolt to release the bolt when flat parts on rotatable hubs are turned adjacent to the member, means are provided for scattering the combination when the bolt is withdrawn or alternatively when it is shot. The member i pivoted at o has a finger n which controls its pivoted movement. Permutation elements are mounted on each side of the pivot o, above the member i on one side of the pivot and below on the other. They consist of knobs a with rigidly attached dials b on which letters or numerals are marked. Also rigid with the spindles are toothed wheels d. Rotatably mounted on the spindle are discs c with hubs having a flattened part k. Attached to each disc c is a spring f with a projection e which may engage between any pair of teeth on the wheel d, so that the discs c and hubs k turn when the knobs a are rotated to set the hubs to align their flat parts k so as to allow the member i to turn under the action ot its spring r. To change the combination, the projection e must be disconnected from the teeth of the wheel d. This is effected by pressing down a plate by means of a key inserted in the member g, inclined beaks on the plate engaging the springs f and releasing the projection e from the teeth of the wheel d, allowing the discs b to be rotated to the new combination. The projections e re-engage the wheels d when the plate carrying the beaks j is returned. The spindles of the rotatable setting knobs a carry cams m at their inner ends, these cams being turned during the setting of the hubs of the discs c. On operation of the bolt, a plate l is carried with it and cut away parts thereon, shown in Fig. 1, engage the cams m, causing them to rotate to scatter the combination. Fig. 16 shows the bolt C in its blocked position, a spring pawl s engaging the end of the pivoted member i. Setting of the hubs k results in the member i rocking out of the path of the pawl s, when the bolt can be withdrawn. The scattering of the combination causes the member i to rock, depressing the pawl which snaps back into blocking engagement, when the bolt is again shot.
