Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus for Controlling an Automatic
Embroidery Machine
The present invention relates to apparatus for controlling an automatic embroidery machine.
Previously proposed apparatus for controlling an automatic embroidery machine included an electronic control device having a microprocessor and a work store. In this apparatus the work store is a fixed component of the automatic embroidery machine control system. To change the design produced by the embroidery machine the incorporated work store must be detached and loaded with new data, which data may be incorporated in punched tape, magnetic tap or other data carriers.
Since the supply of new data into the work store of the embroidery machine must take place directly in the region of the installation of the embroidery machine, problems arise as a result of the fluff in the air, from dust and from the high humidity in the environment of the embroidery machine. Furthermore, the disadvantage arises, that for the point in time of the release and fresh insertion of data in the work store the embroidery machine must be put out of operation, as a result of which undesirable standstill time arises.
According to the invention, there is provided apparatus for controlling an automatic embroidery machine comprising an electronic control system, having a microprocessor and a work store in the form of a replaceable, non-volatile, memory, the microprocessor being arranged to effect control of the embroidery machine in dependence upon the data stored in the work store.
According to the invention, there is further provided apparatus for controlling an automatic embroidery machine including connection means for receiving a non-volatile memory pack, a control system having a microprocessor responsive to the data stored in the non-volatile memory pack to effect control of the embroidery machine in dependence thereon.
Apparatus for controlling an automatic embroidery machine and embodying the invention, will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the embroidery machine and the control apparatus; and
Figure 2 is a block diagram of the control apparatus.
A gantry type embroidery machine 1 is illustrated in Figure 1, which is arranged in a location 2 of a textile factory. This gantry type embroidery machine has a microprocessor control system 3 and a receiver housing 4.
This receiver housing 4 has connection means arranged to receive two work store packs 5, each in the form of a non-volatile memory. Each pack 5 is of parallelepiped configuration and houses a read/write memory. Each work store pack 5 can be plugged into a respective opening in the receiver housing 4 to be coupled by connection means to the microprocessor control system 3. By means of a switch 6, the microprocessor of the system can be selectively coupled to one or other of the work store packs 5.
Each work store pack can take the form of a battery buffered store, a magnetic honeycomb store, a core store or an electrically releasable fixed value store. A cabinet 7 separate from the gantry embroidery machine 1 is provided for holding a library of packs. To load fresh data into the work store pack 5 a supply device in the form of a write unit 8 is installed preferably in an airconditioned room 9 separate from the location 2.
As shown in Figure 1, the work store pack 5 is supplied with fresh data supplied from a punched tape 10. The punched tape 10 for example for the control of other embroidery machines is stored in a cabinet 11 and is only used for the purpose of the transfer of its data to a work store pack 5 with the aid of the supply device 8. The work store pack 5 thus forms a separate transportable component, which can be mounted independently of the microprocessor control system 3 of the gantry embroidery machine 1 as well as being detachable and capable of being loaded separately.
Figure 2 indicates how a work store 5 of this kind co-operates with the microprocessor control system 3 of the gantry embroidery machine 1. As shown a work store pack 5, which is connected by means of a predetermined number of plug contacts 12 to an interface 13, is mounted within the receiver housing 4. A control channel 1 4a leads from this interface 13 to the microprocessor 14 of the control system 3. A program supply unit 15, a data supply unit 16, and a machine interface unit 1 7 are connected to this control channel 1 4a, which is connected through channels 1 8 to the drive of the gantry embroidery machine 1.The programme supply unit 15, the data supply unit 1 6 and the machine interface unit 17 are furthermore connected through data channels 1 9 as well as control channels 20 with one another as also with the microprocessor 14 and the interface 1 5.
By the choice of a work store, which is not a fixed component of the embroidery machine control and can be released remotely from the embroidery machine and can be provided with fresh data, not only standstill time of the embroidery machine can be avoided, but also the programming of the work store can be substantially simplified. The work store described is capable of being inserted in a simple manner from externally into the control apparatus of the embroidery machine or respectively removed therefrom and interchanged with other work stores, so that immediately after the exchange, the embroidery machine can again be set into operation. The detachment and reprogramming of the work store is effected in a loading device in the form of a write unit separate from the embroidery machine, which is preferably arranged in an air-conditioned room, so that the incorporation of new data in the work store from, for example, punched tapes, magnetic tapes or other data carriers can be effected without problems. The work store can be constructed as a battery buffered store, a magnetic honeycomb store, a core store or an electrically releasable fixed value store. The work store is insertable as an individual component which can be transported and is insertable both in the control device of the embroidery machine as also in the write unit separated therefrom, without, during the transport operation, the data in the store being lost or changed.
