Abstract
207,507. Guy, A. Nov. 25, 1922, [Convention date]. Thermally-actuated valves.-Relates to temperature regulators for electrically-heated appliances of the kind in which a retaining member is normally held in position by solder but releases a spring-actuated member to break an electric circuit when the solder melts. Fig. 1 shows a construction in which an arm 3 is held set by solder in a recess round the pivoting screw 14. A spring-actuated rod 4 carrying a contact 8 and an apertured plate 15 is held in the circuit-closed position by the engagement of a shoulder 5 on the arm 3 with a spring 17 on the plate 15. When the solder melts the arm 3 rotates slightly, allowing the rod 4 and plate 15 to move up and break contact. At the end of the movement the left side of the aperture 16 moves the arm 3'back to its original position where it is re-soldered. The apparatus is re-set by depressing the rod 4, the spring 17 slipping over the shoulder 5. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the modifications shown in Figs. 2 (Cancelled) and 5 (Cancelled), and it is stated that all the regulators may be applied to closing valves in gas-heated appliances. According to the construction shown in Fig. 2 (Cancelled), two members 3, 3<1> are fixed to the sides of a thin metal container 1 containing solder and grip a rod 4 resting in notches 5. When the solder melts the members 3, 3<1> become more resilient and allow the rod 4 to move to the right under spring actuation to break a circuit &c. In its final position the rod 4 is still gripped by the jaws 3, 3<1> which taper so that their distance apart is the same as above. After the solder has solidified, the apparatus is re-set by pressing the rod 4 into its original position. Fig. 5 (Cancelled) shows a modification in which the rod 4 is gripped by a spring-pressed member 3 inserted into the container. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
