Abstract
207,359. Wilson, E. C. Nov. 1, 1922. Chain wrenches.-Pipe tongs, particularly for use in handling oil well casings, comprise a lever 10 and two oppositely disposed members or series of links 14, 16 and 15, 17 pivotally connected at their inner ends to the lever and detachably connected together at their outer ends, preferably by means of a spring-actuated locking catch 18. The catch consists of a member 40 pivoted by a pin 41 to the link 16 and pressed inwards by a spring 45 on the pin. A central narrow part engages between lugs 43 on the link 17 and the head of the member locks behind the lugs, the surfaces 40<c> in engagement being concentric to the pivot 41 to prevent unintentional disengagement. When the pairs of links are closed together, surfaces 40b and' 48, on the member 40 and lugs 43 respectively, engage the member 40 is swung outwards and then snaps into locking position. The ends of the links 14, 15 are bifurcated to embrace the lever 10 and the pins 20, 22, by which they are connected, are positioned as shown so as to provide a ratchet gripping action of the tool. The inner parts 25, 26 of the bifurcations may be arranged to limit the movement of the links 14, 15 by meeting the lever 10. In use the tool is suspended from a derrick by an eye-bolt at the centre of gravity and is operated by an engine line through an eye at the outer end of the lever 10. Handles 50 are provided for manipulating the links.
