Abstract
A plug and socket connection has a plug receiver (17) made of insulating material which can be inserted in an aperture (13 figure 1, not shown) in a distributor housing (10) and is secured in the functional position by an element (28). A plug 22 of insulating material which can be plugged into the plug receiver (17) accommodates plug tongues (32) provided with attached conductors (33) in respective chambers (23). The contact tongues (32) project into a recess (21) in the plug receiver (17) for connection to a socket (36, figure 2, not shown). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A plug and socket connection for ignition distributors on combustion engines
The invention originates from a plug and socket connection according to the preamble to the main claim. in order to fix the spigot of the plug receiver in the distributor housing, one form of ignition distributor has a slot in its housing wall which starts at the edge of the housing and the length of which amounts to more than double its width. In practice, the comparatively long slot has lead to inadmissible deformation of the housing due to material stresses.
With the plug and socket connection according to the invention, the disadvantage set forth in the state of the art is overcome. The invention is based on the concept of not dividing the annular continuous ho us- ing rim and of arranging the spigot of the plug receiver in the less critical central section of the housing wall.
Advantageous further developments of the invention are described in the sub-claims. By means of the arrangement of the plug and socket connection according to claim 2, the functional position of the plug receiver is effected simply and more reliably.
Each plug tongue together with its conductor for the assembled plug and socket connection is pushed into the plug receiver wherein the insert position substantially secures a barbed hook on the tongue.
This has lead to a replaced plug tongue no longer being sufficiently anchored in the plug receiver. This disadvantage is overcome when the plug is formed according to claim 3; a simple retention is possible with the features of claim 4.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing and is decribed in detail in the description of the figures. Figure lisa perspective view of an ignition distributor housing on a reduced scale;
Figure 2 is a radial section through the plug and socket connection inserted in the housing, to a larger scale; and Figure 3 is an exploded view of the plug and socket connection to a larger scale.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing and is described in detail in the description of the figures. Figure lisa perspective view of an ignition distributor housing on a reduced scale;

An ignition distributor housing 10 in Figure 1 has a hollow cylindrical wall 11 with a rim 12. The central section ofthewall 11 hasa rectangular aperture 13 the two side surfaces 14, 15 of which are parallel to the axis 16 of the ignition distributor. A plug and socket connection (Figures 2 and 3) can be inserted in the aperture 13 from the outside and be retained in that functional position.
The plug and socket connection in Figures 2 and 3 has a plug receiver 17 of insulating material provided with a spigot 18 inserted in the aperture 13, a flange 19 engaging the housing 10 and an external portion 20 which is provided with a recess 21. A plug 22 of insulating material hasthree longitudinally arranged chambers 23 parallel to each other and is pushed into an opening 24 in the plug receiver 17. A bump 25 projecting from the outside of the plug and which latches in a depression 26 in the opening 24, secures the plug 22 in its functional position.
A respective groove 27 is recessed in the two side surfaces of the spigot 18 parallel to the axis 16 of the ignition distributor. A securing element 28 made of sheet metal has two slides 29,30 which latch in the grooves 27 when the element 28 is moved in the direction of the arrow 31. Moreover, the element 28 engagesthe housing wall 11 sothatthe plug receiver 17 and consequently the entire plug and socket connection is thus non-displaceably fixed in the distributor housing 10.
A plug tongue 32 with its connected conductor 13 is pushed into each chamber 23 and a barbed hook 34 projecting from the plug tongue secures it in the inserted position. The contact section 34 of each contact tongue 32 projects into the recess 21 in the outer portion 20 and plugs into a sleeve 36 of a socket connector (not illustrated in detail) provided with a protective nozzle 37.
1. A plug and socket connection for ignition distributors on combustion engines comprising:
a) a plug receiver of insulating material has an outer portion provided with a recess and a spigot which is fixed in the distributor housing,
b) preferably three electrical conductors in the interior of the distributor housing each have a plug tongue,
c) each plug tongue is plugged into the plug receiver and projects into the recess in the outer portion for connection with a socket, characterised by:
d) an aperture, into which the spigot of the plug receiver can be guided from the outside, is arranged in the wall of the distributor housing,
e) an element can be fixed to the section of the spigot projecting into the interior of the housing for securing the plug receiver.
2. Aconnection according to claim 1 characterised by:
f) a respective groove is recessed in the two side surfaces of the spigot,
g) the element made of sheet metal has two slides which can be inserted so as to latch in the grooves and engage the inside of the housing wall.
3. A connection according to claim 1 or 2 characterised by:
h) plug tongue with its attached conductor is fixed in a plug of insulating material,
i) the plug can be plugged into an opening in the plug receiver and can be retained in that position, that the contact section of each plug tongue projects into the recess in the outer portion.
4. Aconnection according to one of the preceding claims characterised by:
j) a bump projects from the outside of the plug,
k) a depression receiving the bump is recessed in the opening in the plug receiver.
5. A plug and socket connection for ignition distributors on combustion engines substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Claims (5)
1. A plug and socket connection for ignition distributors on combustion engines comprising:
a) a plug receiver of insulating material has an outer portion provided with a recess and a spigot which is fixed in the distributor housing,
b) preferably three electrical conductors in the interior of the distributor housing each have a plug tongue,
c) each plug tongue is plugged into the plug receiver and projects into the recess in the outer portion for connection with a socket, characterised by:
d) an aperture, into which the spigot of the plug receiver can be guided from the outside, is arranged in the wall of the distributor housing,
e) an element can be fixed to the section of the spigot projecting into the interior of the housing for securing the plug receiver.
2. Aconnection according to claim 1 characterised by:
f) a respective groove is recessed in the two side surfaces of the spigot,
g) the element made of sheet metal has two slides which can be inserted so as to latch in the grooves and engage the inside of the housing wall.
3. A connection according to claim 1 or 2 characterised by:
h) plug tongue with its attached conductor is fixed in a plug of insulating material,
i) the plug can be plugged into an opening in the plug receiver and can be retained in that position, that the contact section of each plug tongue projects into the recess in the outer portion.
4. Aconnection according to one of the preceding claims characterised by:
j) a bump projects from the outside of the plug,
k) a depression receiving the bump is recessed in the opening in the plug receiver.
5. A plug and socket connection for ignition distributors on combustion engines substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
