Abstract
207,278. United Oil & Coal Corporation, Ltd., Robinson, J. G., and Thom, R. A. Aug. 29, 1922. Spray burners. - A spray burner comprises a central fuel passage 1 regulated by an adjustable needle valve 3 and a surrounding annular steam or compressed air passage 5, the wall of which is threaded internally and externally to receive cones 7, 10. The cone 7 encloses the conical end 8 of the fuel passage so as to constitute an inner steam or air nozzle 9. Holes 15 drilled in the cone 7 admit steam or air to the space between the cones 7, 10. The cone 10 is adjustable by means of handles 12 on the wall of the passage 5 so as to constitute an outer steam or compressed air nozzle 11. A packing member 16 interposed between the cones 7, 10 closes the holes 15 when the outer cone is screwed hard back. The conical end 8 may be formed with inclined or helical vanes 13 on its outer surface to impart a whirling motion to the steam or air. The needle valve 3 may also be formed with vanes 14. Pointers 17, 18 may be provided to indicate on graduated scales the adjustment of the cone 10 and needle-valve handwheel 4. The included angles of the inner and outer cones may be 46‹ and 60‹ respectively these angles being stated to be such that the discharge from the inner cone effects atomization and spreading of the fuel jet and the discharge from outer cones increases the spreading of the jet and shortens amd widens the zone of combustion.
