Abstract
A patient who has been subjected to surgery such as colostomy has an end, called a stoma, of the intestine projecting from his body, usually from his abdomen. Often a colostomy bag for receiving waste material is attached to the patient's body surrounding the stoma. When the user does not need to wear the bag, some form of protective cover over the otherwise exposed stoma is highly desirable. A stoma cover is constructed with a coupling 14 whereby it can be secured to a surgical pad or dressing and an envelope 18 carried by the coupling and containing a fibrous pad 24 in juxtaposition with a gas-absorbent material 26. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Stoma cover
A patient who has been subject to surgery such as colostomy has an end, called a stoma, of the intestine projecting from his body, usually from his abdomen. Often a colostomy bag for receiving waste material is attached to the body surrounding the stoma. In this connection, attention is drawn to our Patent Application No. 1 3411/77 (Serial No. ) and the divisional applications therefrom.
When the user does not need to wear the bag, some form of protective cover over the otherwise exposed stoma is highly desirable.
According to the present invention, a stoma cover has a coupling whereby it can be secured to a surgical pad or dressing and an envelope carried by the coupling and containing a fibrous pad in juxtaposition with a gasabsorbent material.
The envelope may have at least one gas exit port therein, and the gas absorbent material is then located so that any gas escaping from or expelled from the stoma is forced to pass through the said material before it reaches the (or each) gas exit port.
The coupling may be one element of the two-element coupling described and claimed in the said Patent Application No. 13411/77.
In use, such a cover protects the stoma and substantially removes or reduces any disagreeable odour in the event of flatus.
The pad of absorbent material may be fibrous cotton bearing activated carbon particles.
A non-limiting example of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation view of a generally circular stoma cover according to the invention, that is to say looking at the body side of the cover, and
Figure 2 is a schematic vertical section taken through the axis of the cover shown in
Fig. 1.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the illustrated stoma cover is intended to protect a stoma 10 of a user whose skin of his/her abdomen is seen at 12. The stoma cover has a coupling 14 and an envelope of p.v.c. film or sheet formed by a front wall 16 and a rear wall 18.
The walls 16 and 18 are secured together, e.g. by heat welding by a weld 20, around their periphery. The rear wall 18 has a central circular hole bounded by the coupling 14.
The coupling 14 is designed to co-operate with another coupling (not shown) on a pad or dressing (not shown) which is placed on the skin 12. A suitable surgical adhesive pad or dressing for this purpose is disclosed and claimed in our Patent Application No. 79 44096 Serial No.
The envelope formed by the front and rear circular walls 16, 18 contains a fibrous pad 24 and, adjacent thereto, a pad of gas absorbent material 26. The latter may be a fibrous cotton or like pad bearing particles of activated carbon. The pads 24 and 26 may be held in place by a circular heat weld 30.
Two opposed ears 32 and a gripping loop 34 are formed integrally with, or secured to, the coupling 14. This is to permit the wearer to readily remove the stoma cover when he or she wishes to do so.
The front wall 16 has one or more gas exit ports or holes therein. These ports may be mere pinpricks. One is shown at 36 in Fig. 2.
The function of the pad 24 is to present a soft and non-irritant surface to the unguarded end of the stoma, and the function of the remaining parts are to hold the pad 24 appropriately in place and allow it to be readily removed, and to cater for escape of flatus gases while the cover is being worn.
Claims (3)
1. A stoma cover having a coupling whereby it can be secured to a surgical pad or dressing and an envelope carried by the coupling and containing a fibrous pad in juxtaposition with a gas-absorbent material.
2. A cover according to claim 1 in which the envelope has at least one gas exit port therein, and the gas absorbent material is located so that any gas escaping from or expelled from the stoma is forced to pass through the said material before it reaches the (or each) gas exit port.
3. A cover according to claim 1 or 2 in which the envelope is formed by a front and rear wall of plastics material secured together around their periphery.
