Abstract

A patient transfer trolley has a wheel mounted mattress supporting frame 1 including a pair of spaced side members 3 and a patient transfer frame 5 in the form of a flap is connected by spaced hinges 7, 8 to one or each side member 3 for movement between a raised or lowered inoperative position, and a generally horizontal operative position. In the operative position the flap 5 is arranged to overlap the upper surface of a bed or operating table so that a patient can be slid bodily over the flap 5 between the trolley and the bed or table. The flap 5 may be constructed from a plastics material or from metal. The flap may alternatively be provided on a bed or an operating table. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for transferring patients between body supporting assemblies This invention relates to apparatus for facilitating the transfer of a patient lying in a prone position between supporting surfaces of a pair of body supporting assemblies.
Where used herein the term "body supporting assembly" is intended to cover a bed, a wheel-mounted trolley, or an operating table.
According to my invention a body supporting assembly is provided along one side thereof with a transfer frame which is hingedly connected to the assembly for movement between an inoperative position and an operative position in which the frame lies in a generally horizontal plane so that a patient can be slid bodily from the said assembly and onto another similar body supporting asembly in side-by-side relationship with the first.
In the operative position the frame overlaps the upper surface of the other assembly by which it is supported to take the weight of patient during such transfer.
Preferably the frame comprises a flap hingedly connected at spaced points to a side member of a mattress supporting frame and, in the operative position, the upper surface of the flap lies substantially in a common plane with the upper surface of the mattress.
Conveniently the transfer frame comprises a one-piece plastics moulding. This may be produced from plastics sheet by a vacuum forming process, or by low pressure moulding.
Alternatively the transfer frame may be produced by injection moulding in a die.
In a modification the transfer frame may be constructed from fibre glass or laminates of wood and/or plastics material.
In another construction the transfer frame may be of metal, suitably aluminium, and may be covered in a low-friction material.
A transfer frame may be hingedly connected to each of the two opposite sides of the supporting assembly.
One embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wheelmounted trolley provided with a patient transfer frame; Figure 2 is end view of the body of Fig. 1; Figure 3 is similar to Fig. 2 but showing the frame in a lowered inoperative position; and Figure 4 shows the trolley in side-by-side relationship with a bed, and the frame in an operative position.
The trolley illustrated in the drawings is of conventional fixed height type in general use in hospitals for patient transfer. The trolley comprises a wheel mounted frame of oblong rectangular outline for supporting a mattress 2. The frame 1 is constituted by a pair of spaced parallel side members 3 which are interconnected at opposite ends by spaced parallel end members 4.
A patient transfer frame 5 is hingedly connected to one of the side members 3. As illustrated the frame 5 comprises a substantially rigid flap extending substantially between opposite ends of the frame 1. The flap is generally of planar outline but terminates at its outer edge in a region 6 of slightly curved outline. The flap is hingedly connected at an inner edge to the side member 3 for angular movement about an axis parallel to the side member 3 by means of a pair of spaced hinges 7, 8. The hinges 7, 8 are mounted on locai strengthening thickenings 9 or ribs on the underside of the flap 5.
The flap 5 may comprise a one-piece plastics moulding constructed by any suitable known method, for example vacuum forming, low pressure moulding or injection moulding in a die. Alternatively the flap 5 may be constructed from fibre glass or from laminates of wood and/or plastics. In another construction the flap 5 may be of metal, suitably aluminium, and may be covered in a low friction material.
The flap 5 can be moved angularly through 180 between a upwardly directed generally vertical inoperative position, as shown in Fig.
2, in which it forms a side rail for the trolley, and a downwardly extending position shown in Fig. 3 for ready access to a patient.
In operation, to facilitate patient transfer between the trolley and another body supporting assembly 1 0, for example a bed or operating table, as shown in Fig. 4 the trolley and the assembly 10 are first moved into a sideby-side relationship. The flap 5 is then hinged into the operative position shown in which it overlaps the assembly 10 and its upper face lies substantially in a common plane with the upper surface of the mattress 2. A patient can be transferred between the trolley and the assembly 10 by generally transverse bodily sliding movement in either direction with the flap 5 acting to bridge the gap between the two assemblies.During this movement part of the weight of the patient is taken by the assembly 1 0 by transfer through the flap 5 which also assists in preventing relative movement between the two assemblies during transfer.
The provision of the curved region 6 acts as a ramp to facilitate movement of a patient onto and off the flap 5.
A similar flap may also be hingedly connected to the side member 3 on the opposite side of the trolley.
Also operating tables and hospital beds can be provided on one or both side edges with similar flap.
My invention can also be used with other types of wheel mounted trolleys, for example of the type in which the frame 1 is movable between a generally horizontal position and eiiher of two oppositely inclined positions, or with trolleys which are adjustable in height.
The use with this latter type of trolley has the advantage that the effect of gravity can be used to assist in patient transfer. For example, when transferring a patient from the trolley, the trolley can first be raised so that the mattress 2 is above the surface of the assembly 10. When the flap 5 is hingedly moved into its operative position it is inclined downwardly to facilitate the sliding movement of the patient. Conversely, when transfer in the opposite direction is desired, the mattress 2 is lowered relative to the assembly 10 so that the flap 5 is inclined in the opposite direction.
