Description
SPECIFICATION
Improved packaging/display carton and blank therefore
This invention relates to an improved design of packaging carton which can be used to transport articles to a point of sale and can there be used, with a minimum of modification, to display the articles for sale. The design of carton to which this invention relates has the advantage of being easily erectable from a one-piece blank of stiff yet foldable material (e.g. corrugated paperboard) and the blank constitutes a further feature of the invention.
The invention has particular utility to a packaging carton for a plurality of similar boxes each containing half a dozen eggs. It is known to package a plurality of layers of half-dozen egg boxes on an opentopped tray and to embrace the tray and the layers of boxes supported thereby with a shrink-wrap film.
Such packaging is cheap, but is not very strong and does need careful handling. Further it is not suitable for direct display purposes since with the shrinkwrap film removed the layers of boxes are inadequately retained on the tray, and if the film is not fully removed, it hinders removal of boxes from the tray and increases the possibility of boxes spilling from the tray by subsequent careless or inadvertent removal of the film (or a part thereof) by a purchaser.
It is known to erect a packaging carton from a one-piece blank by doubling over an extension on one side to enclose a portion of an adjacent side and this invention employs this known method of erecting the blank.
It is also known to provide a carton blank with a line of weakness to facilitate removal by tearing of part of the blank after erection into a carton.
According to one aspect of the invention, a onepiece blank for a packaging/display carton comprises a tray portion and a conjoined cover portion, the tray portion comprising a rectangular base panel to which are hingedly connected a pair of opposed side wall panels, a rear wall panel and a front rim panel, the said side wall panels each having a pair of extensions attached thereto whereby in the erected condition of the blank one of which extensions can be doubled around a part of the rear-wall panel and the other of which extensions has a part that can be sandwiched between doubled parts of the front rim panel, the cover portion comprising a rectangular top panel and at least one edge panel, which edge panel can be locked to a part of the tray portion in the erected condition of the blank.
Desirably the connection between the tray and cover portions represents a line of weakness whereby the cover portion can easily be torn away from the erected tray portion when the carton erected from the blank is to be used for display purposes.
Suitably the top panel of the cover portion has edge panels on three sidesthereof, an opposite pair of these edge panels being constructed to be doubled back on erection of the blank to enclose a torn gue on each end of the other (or front) edge panel.
The rear wall panel may be apertured to expose the contents of the carton and suitably the aperture in the rear wall panel corresponds in size to the opening at the front of the erected blank formed between the other parts of said other extensions of the side wall panels and between the doubled front rim panel and the front edge panel of the cover portion.
The locking of the cover portion to the tray portion can be effected at the front of the carton, suitably by the provision of a semicircularcuton each of the other parts of said other extensions of the side wall panels and two similar semicircular cuts spacedapart on the front edge panel of the cover portion.
According to a further aspect of the invention a packaging/display carton comprises a tray portion and a hingedly connected cover portion, the tray portion comprising a rectangular base panel, a pair of opposed upstanding side walls, a rearwall and a
U-shaped front wall, and the cover portion comprising a top panel and an edge panel normai thereto, which edge panel locks across the top of the sides of the U-shaped front wall to hold the top and base panels parallel, the U-shaped front wall being formed by a dobled-over front rim panel attached to the base panel which sandwiches L-shaped extensions of the side walls and the rear wall has parts sandwiched by other extensions of the side walls.
One embodiment of blank and carton in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Figure lisa plan ofthe blank,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a carton erected from the blank of Figure 1 and seen from the front, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the carton of Figure 2 seen from the rear and with the cover portion removed therefrom.
Referring to Figure 1,the blank comprises a tray portion 1 and a cover portion 2 hingedly connected together along a perforated line of weakness 3.
The tray portion 1 consists of a rectangular base panel 4, a pair of opposed side wall panels sa, Sb, a rear wall panel 6 (having an aperture 6a therein) and a front rim panel 7 having an outer strip 7a and an inner strip 7b. Slots 8 are formed in the base panel 4 adjacent to the strip 7a and tabs 9 are formed on the outer edge of the inner strip 7b. The area 10 between the strips 7a and 7b is delimited by twin crease lines 10a and lOb and terminates in notches 10c.
Each side wall panel has an L-shaped front extension 1 lea, 116 and twin rear extensions 12a, 13a; 12b, 13b. Slots 14, 14b are formed in each side wall panel adjacent to the inner extension part 12a, 12b and tabs 15a,15b are formed on the edge of the outer extension part 13a, 13b for engagement in the slots 14a,14b. Double crease lines 16, 16' are formed between the extension parts on each rear extension.
The cover portion 2 comprises a rectangulartop panel 20 having a front flap 21 (with side tongues 21a, 21b) and opposed double side flaps 22 and 23.
Each side flap has an inner strip 22a, 23a and an outer strip 22b,23b. Slots 24,25 and tabs 26,27 are formed, respectively adjacent to the outer strips 22b, 23b and on the edge of the inner strips 22a, 23a.
To erect the blank into the carton shown in Figure
2, the side wall panels 5a and Sb are bent up about
crease lines 5', and the rear wall panel 6 is bent up
about crease line 6'. The outer extension parts 13a,
13b are passed through the aperture 6a and the
respective tab 15a,15b located in the adjacent slot 14a,14b. The front extensions 11a,11b are now bent about creases 11' and the front rim panel 7 is bent
up and over the lower ends of the extensions 1 7a, 1 it; to leave edges of the extensions in the notches
10c and the tabs 9 located in the slots 8.
The cover portion 2 is now erected by bending the flap 21 upwards about crease 21', turning the tongues 21a, 216 inwards through 90" and sandwiching respective tongues between the inner and outer strips of the flaps 22 and 23, the tabs 26 and 27 locating respectively in the slots 24 and 25. The cover portion 2 can now be turned about the line 3 to close the tray portion and locking of the cover portion in this position is effected by interengagement of semicircuiarthumb locks 28 on the flap 21 with similar semicircular cuts 29 on the L-shaped extensions 1 1a andlib.
From Figure 2 it can be seen that the front of the carton is of U-shaped form which is closed at the top by the flap 21 to give a generally rectangular aperture in the front wall of the carton. By virtue of the line of weakness 3, the cover portion 2 can be torn off the tray portion 1 to leave the carton part shown in Figure 3.
The carton shown has particular utility in the packaging of boxes of half a dozen eggs. 30 such boxes can be fitted into the carton illustrated (three layers of 5 x 2 boxes per layer) and are securely held in place when the cover portion 2 is located over the tray portion 1. (Desirably a slight compression of the boxes between the panels 4 and 20 occurs when the cover portion 2 is locked in place.) When the cover portion 2 is torn off, the egg boxes are available for easy removal by customers in a retail outlet.
Hand holds 30 provided in the side wall panels 5a, Sb facilitate lifting of the filled carton and experiments suggest cartons can readily be made to the illustrated design which will allow two filled cartons, one resting on another, to be lifted with the hand holds of the lower one.
The blank shown in Figure 1 can be cut and creased from a blank of 1010 x 948 mm B-flute, 125 glsm Kraft material. All the creases (e.g. creases 5', 6',10a,10L;,11',16,16',and2i')canbeformedwith 3 mm long cuts interspersed with 6 mm long indented grooves. The line of weakness 3 can be formed with 3 mm long cuts interspersed with 3 mm long indented grooves. All the creases and the line of weakness 3 shown in the blank in Figure 1 are bent upwardly as are thumb locks 28 and the semicircular
pieces defined by the cuts 29.
The flute direction is as shown by the arrows on the panel 20 in Figure 1.
