Abstract

A board 1 for making a design or picture represented in silhouette comprises a stiff base sheet (2) with a layer (3) of metallic, lustrous or coloured material that provides the background. This layer may be covered or coated by a transparent layer (4) of plastics or varnish to protect the background. On the layer 4 there is printed either in block form (as shown) or outline a design 5. The printing ink used is matt and suitable for application by a user of a liquid artists material to fill in the silhouette to complete the picture or design. The board 1 may be provided as a kit with other boards with different designs and with liquid artists materials in pens or with brushes. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in materials for artists This invention relates to improvements in materials for artists and is particularly concerned with providing a board which can be used simply to produce a picture or design by an amatuer.
According to this invention, I provide a board having on one face printing which represents a silhouette with the printing ink being such that ink, paint or other liquid artists material can be applied thereto in use to cover the printing in a desired manner to produce the silhouette in contrast to the remainder of the board face.
The printing on the one face of the board is preferably a block of printing, and in use this block of printing is covered by the ink, paint or other liquid material. However, in some designs, the printing may be an outline which filled in and covered by the user by the selected liquid material.
Preferably, the one face of the board on which the printing is applied is of a metallic lustre or finish so that the contrast achieved in the finished work is black, white or a dense colour with the metallic background.
The printing representing the design of the silhouette can be of any suitable colour, or black or white, and the ink, paint or other liquid material to be applied would contrast therewith.
Preferably, the printing can be of any colour, and the ink, paint or other liquid material to be applied is black.
A suitable printing ink which has properties enabling liquid ink, or paint to be applied is a matt vinyl ink. However, any suitable matt finish ink or paint could be used.
Conveniently, the board according to this invention can be provided as a kit of parts for the user, and such kit may include the liquid material to be applied and a brush or brushes.
Alternatively, the liquid material to be applied may be provided in fibre or felt tipped pen or pens.
A set of boards each having a different design of silhouette printed thereon could be included in a kit. Instructions for use can be included, and a frame or mounting for the finished silhouette could also be provided.
In the preferred use of a board having a metallic lustre or finish, it is possible to use a backing of card or board of paper or even plastics to which a meal foil is bonded or adhesively secured. However, other finishes for achieving a lustrous surface are known, for instance a plastics material having a special surface. The metallic or lustrous surface to be left exposed may be treated to prevent tarnishing or to enhance brilliance.
The actual design of the silhouette printed onto the board can be of any type, and I include both representations in cameo and intaglio within the meaning of the word silhouette as used herein.
In the simplest form of this invention, the face of the board could be a plain matt or gloss colour, and not lustrous or of a metallic finish. Alternatively, the face of the board could be multi-coloured to provide, after the silhouette has been finished, an attractive coloured background.
In order that this invention be understood, reference will now be made to an exemplary embodiment of this invention depicted in the accompanying drawing wherein: Figure 1 is a plan view of a board; and Figure 2 is a schematic section of part of the board.
With reference to the drawing, a board 1 is of square or rectangular shape. The board comprises a laminated sheet having a relatively stiff or thick base sheet 2 to which a layer 3 of metallic, lustrous or coloured material is bonded. To protect the metallic or lustrous surface which provides the eventual background a transparent layer 4, say of- suitable plastics or varnish is applied.
A design 5 is block printed on the surface of layer 4, and in this case represents a sailing boat on the sea.
The design 5 is printed using matt finish printing ink that is suitable for another ink, paint or liquid artists material to be applied and adhered thereto.
In use, the user may apply the selected ink or other liquid artists material by a brush to cover the whole of the block printing representing the design 5. Alternatively, the liquid artists material may be provided in a felt or fibre tipped pen.
Preferably, the design 5 is printed in a contrast clearly visible to the user, for instance scarlet on a silver lustrous background. The liquid artists material to be applied is sufficiently dense to cover the design 5 and is yet another contrast to the background, for instance, black or white.
If desired, and as may be directed in the instructions for the user, some of the fine detail of the design may be depicted in outline only for filling in by the user. It is also envisaged that in some designs the whole silhouette may be depicted in outline.
It will be appreciated that the board may be presented to the user as a kit of parts including a plurality of boards and suitable liquid artists material(s) with brush(es) or in pens.
The kits may be prepared for different degrees of difficulty, subjects or even based on educational themes for children.
