Abstract

A filler disintegrant for pharmaceutical compositions e.g. tablets, capsules, comprises sago flour and/or a modified sago flour or starch.

Description

SPECIFICATION Excipient for pharmaceutical compositions This invention relates to pharmaceutical compositions, and in particular to an excipienttherefor.
Conventional excipients for pharmaceutical compositions in tablet or capsule form include potato, maize, wheat and rice starches and carbohydrates such as lactose (milk sugar), sucrose and glucose.
These known excipients have the problem that they can cause allergic reactions to some patients.
The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically active ingredient and, as an excipient, sago flour and/or a modified sago flour or starch. Such a composition is particularly applicable to pharmaceutical preparations in tablet or capsule form.
The excipient used in the compositions of the invention imparts a significant hypoallergenic, thus significantly reducing the risk of allergic reactions in the patient.
The sago is preferably milled to a particle size of 20 to 65 microns. There are two preferred ways of making up compositions in accordance with the invention, as follows: 1. A paste of 20% starch in boiling water is prepared, and used as a granulating medium for tablets or capsules.
2. The starch is used as a filler and disintegrant in tablets, the filler comprising 10 to 25 wt.% of the composition.
Three preferred compositions in accordance with the invention are as follows: COMPOSITION 1: Vitamin B1 100 mg Calcium Sulphate 100 mg Sago Flour 50 mg Vegetable Wax 10 mg COMPOSITION2: Acetylsalicylic Acid 300 mg Sago Flour 30 mg Vegetable Wax 15 mg COMPOSITION3: Dried Yeast 300 mg Powdered Silica 10 mg Powdered Sago 15 mg
CLAIMS 1. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically active ingredient, as an excipient, sago flour and/or a modified sago flour or starch.
2. Acomposition according to claim 1 wherein the excipient has a particle size of 20 to 65 microns.
3. A pharmaceutical composition substantially as herein described with reference to any one of Compositions 1 to 3 herein.
4. A composition according to any preceding claim in tablet or capsule form.
5. A composition according to claim 4 which is in tablet form and wherein the excipient is present in an amount of 10 to 25 wtP/o.
6. A method of preparing a pharmaceutical composition according to claim 4 or claim 5 wherein a paste of 20% sago flour and/or modified sago flour or starch in boiling water is used as a granulating medium for the tablets or capsules.
