Abstract
A basin unit (1) has an upwardly-extending splash back (3) for fixing to a supporting wall (M). The upper periphery of the splash back has a rearwardly-extending plate (5) optionally with an upwardly-extending wing (6) so that it may be used as a hose support. The splash back (3) is spaced from the supporting wall of a building to which the basin unit is fixed, so that a tap (9) fixed to the splash back may be connected to a water pipe (18) mounted on the face of the wall or, by using a connection piece, with a water pipe let into the wall. The structure which includes the splash back can be arcuate in front elevation to provide a porch-like structure over the basin 1. (With Figure 3). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A basin unit
The present invention relates to a basin unit having a basin and a structure including a splash back extending upwardly from the basin.
In prior art designs of basin units with a splash back, the splash back is mounted directly against a wall or other structure ofthe building on which the basin is fixed, so that it is more or less necessary for the water supply pipe to the basin to be embedded in the wall, under the plaster layer of the wall, or channelled into the supporting structure.
However, it is not uncommon for water pipes to be mounted on the wall plaster or other wall coating (particularly in the case of out-houses or the like) so that, in this case, it is necessary to recess the pipe into the wall or other structure when fitting the basin unit in place, so that the back ofthe basin may be located flatly against the wall plaster or, if this is not done, to mount the unit so that the basin is spaced from the wall.
The present invention seeks to provide a basin unit which incorporates a space for supply pipes on that side of the unit designed to confront the face of the wall or other supporting structure to which the basin unit is to be fixed so that externally mounted pipes running to the basin unit may be accommodated without difficulty.
According to the present invention a basin unit having a basin and a structure including a splash back extending upwardly from the basin, is characterised in that the structure has, at least around the upper part of the periphery of the splash back, a rearwardly-extending plate adapted, in use ofthe unit, to rest against a plane face of an upright supporting structure to which the basin is fixed, which plate serves to space the rear side of the splash back from the adjacent plane face of the supporting structure.
Because the rear surface of the splash back is moved somewhat forwardly of the said plane face, a free space is provided to accommodate externally mounted pipes. When mounting a basin unit according to the invention on a wall or other supporting structure having recessed pipes, it is only necessary to employ an extension piece between a tap of the unit and the recessed pipe.
The basin and the structure including the upwardly extending splash back may be designed so that the structure and the basin are joined together in mounting the unit in place. Alternatively the basin and the structure may be made in one piece.
Suitably the rearwardly-extending plate also extends forwardly of the splash back and terminates in an outwardly-extending wing. Desirably, the periphery of the upper part of the splash back is of arcuate shape, whereby the said structure defines a porch-like member over the basin. The wing is conveniently widest at the top of the arch since this gives a more robust structure, and provides a recess to accommodate a hose.
One embodiment of basin unit in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure lisa front view of the basin unit,
Figure 2 is a side-view ofthe basin unit of Figure 1 shown partly in section and connected to a water pipe located below plaster on a wall, and
Figure 3 is a view of the basin unit similar to that shown in Figure 2, which is, however, now shown connected to a water pipe located on top of the wall plaster.
In all three Figures a basin 1, which is to be connected with a waste pipe and a water supply, is shown fixed to a plan supporting face of a wall M.
The connection to the waste pipe is by way of a union 2 in a conventional manner. In the illustrated embodiment, a splash back 3 is formed as part of a structure capable of being connected to the basin 1 by way, for example, of screws 4, which are also used for supporting the basin 1 against the wall M.
The splash back 3 is integral with a forwardly- and rearwardly-extending arcuate plate 5, the forwardly-extending part of which defines a porchlike member over the basin 1 which narrows towards its lower extremities and is integral with an outwardly-extending wing 6 which is widest at the top of the arch. At the top of the arched porch-like structure a space 7 is defined above the plate 5 and between the wing 6 and the face of the wall M which can accommodate a hose. In the example of Figure 2, the water supply pipe is shown at 8 and is placed beneath the plaster layer of the wall M, a free space 20 between the wall M and the splash back 3 being bridged by an extension piece 10 which interconnects the pipe 8 and a tap 9. The tap 9 may, if desired be designed with more than one outlet, and, as shown in the drawing, one ofthese outlets may be fora hose.
In the example of Figure 3, a water supply pipe 18 is located on the face of the wall M, so that an extension piece 10 is not required, it being possible for a bent union on the supply pipe 18 to be joined directly to the tap 9. A suitably sized opening can be formed in an appropriate part ofthe rearwardly-extending part of the plate 5 to allow the pipe 18 to passtheret- hrough into the free space 20. It will be appreciated that the free space 20 makes it possible for the basin unit to be simply connected to a surface-mounted pipe on the wall.
It will be further appreciated that it is possible for the supply pipe 18 to extend horizontally on the wall
M to the tap 9, it then being necessary to form the opening in the rearwardly-extending part of the plate 5 at a lower position around the arc of the porch-like structure.
1. A basin unit having a basin and a structure including a splash back extending upwardly from the basin, characterised in that the structure has, at least around the upper part of the periphery of the splash back, a rearwardly-extending plate adapted, in use of the unit, to rest against a plane face of an upright supporting structure to which the basin is fixed, which plate serves to space the rear side of the splash back from the adjacent plane face of the supporting structure.
