Branches and mains, connecting. - In a branch to main connection in which a ferrule c, closed by a screwed plug d, is screwed into the opening b in the main a, a branch fitting being screwed to the ferrule and having a screwed passage in line with the axis thereof, before screwing on the branch fitting the squared or angular projection f<2> of a screwed boss f<1> carried by a spindle f is inserted in a correspondingly shaped opening d' in the plug. The branch fitting e with an internally screwed passage e<3> is then screwed to the ferrule, the boss f<1> and the ferrule having corresponding threads. The branch fitting is closed by a stuffing box g<1> on the cap g. Rotation of the spindle may then withdraw the plug d past the outlet e<2> to open up the waterway. The plug d may be formed with an extension d<2> and a cutting edge d<4> pointed or annular, so as to remove any obstruction which may choke the waterway. If necessary, when the plug is withdrawn beyond the outlet e<2>, the spindle and stuffing box may be removed, and a plain cap substituted.
