Abstract
205.605. Pratt, F. J., and Downing, T. F. Aug. 3, 1922. Linear-dimension gauges; surface and outline gauges. - A gauge for measuring the outside diameters of cylinders, cones, &c., during grinding and similar machining operations comprises a supporting arm F, G supported on the shield C of the grinding wheel B, a member E encircling the cylinder D and carried by a casting H pivoted to the said supporting arm, adjustable elements K<1>, K<2> carried in the member E and impinging on the cylinder and a yielding stylus K also impinging on the cylinder and co-operating with a dial indicator gauge L<1>. The part G of the supporting arm is in the form of a yoke pivoted to the other part F and supported by a spring F<a> on an extension F<1> and having pivoted to it the casting H which houses the spring- pressed stylus K actuating the pin L of the dial indicator gauge L'. A pattern is first set up on the adjustable bed-plate R and the points K<1>, K<2> adjusted and locked in position in the member E and the stylus K impinges on the pattern and the dial indicator gauge pointer is set to zero. The cylinder D to be ground is then put in place of the pattern, the gauge during these operations being swung to the dotted line position for removal of the pattern. The pointer will indicate the amount by which the diameter of the cylinder is too great and will be once more at zero when the cylinder, is ground to the correct size. In this case the gauge is stationary and the cylinder reciprocates in front of the grinding wheel, but to grind a cone the gauge is carried on the adjustable bedplate R as 'shown in. Fig. 2. A pattern of the correct-sized cone is set up on the plate R and this plate is adjusted so that the edge of the pattern coincides with a line just touching the edge of the wheel B and at right angles to the plane of rotation of the wheel. The parts K<1>, K<2>, K and the dial indicator gauge are then adjusted as before at any arbitrary distance from the end of the cone-pattern which is then replaced by the cone to be ground, the gauge being at the same distance from the end of this cone as in the case of the pattern. In this construction the gauge remains at the same part of the cone throughout the grinding operation, which is completed, as before, when the dial indicator gauge pointer returns to zero. In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the tactile members are kept against the work-piece by a weighted extension V<Z>. Gem-stones are used for the points of the members K, K<1> and K<2>.
