Abstract
205,479. Waltefaugle, G. A., and Jarrand, A. A. J. Oct. 11, 1922, [Convention date]. Variable-speed and reversing gearing of the kind comprising elements 1, 6, Fig. 3, having annular gear tracks of curved contour connected by rollers 3 which are tilted to vary the speed, is modified in that the said tilting is done by the power of the engine when the rollers are turned about a diameter through the points of gear contact, like the front wheel of a bicycle. The rollers 3 are supported in frames 12, Fig. 4, which are eccentrically supported at their ends 22 &c. in a carrier ring 7 so that the required initial deflection of the rollers with respect to thin paths on the discs is effected by moving in unison the inner ends of arms 33 which engage a central sliding boss 36. In the arrangement shown, the disc 1 is secured to a driving-shaft 2, the carrier 7 is fixed, and the disc 6 transmits to the stub shaft 58 of an epicyclic reversing-gear. The boss 36 is moved by a centrifugal governor 45 acting against a spring 47, or is otherwise controlled by way of a movable cap 49 and a cable 56. Frictional engaging pressure is maintained by balls 106, Fig. 9, which become wedged between cams on the back of the disc 6 and a spring-pressed boss on the shaft 58. Alternatively the carrier ring 7 may be adapted to rotate, and the gearing may be used differentially to drive two shafts. Or it may be adapted to be actuated say by a windmill and by an auxiliary motor. The reversing-gear described comprises a sun gear 66 on the shaft 58 and an internal gear 62 secured to the tail shaft 65. Planet gears 67 are carried by a drum 61 which is adapted to be engaged by a cone clutch 84 for forward driving, and by a band brake 70 for reversed driving. The clutch cone 84 slides on gear drum 62 and is kept from being thrust too far by disengaging spring 85 by hooks j engaging projections k on the drum. The brake 70 is controlled by a spindle 73, Fig. 10, with threads of opposite hand connected to the clutch-operating lever 91 by a rod 83. The reversing-gear is thus operated by way of a single rod 82. The spindle 73 carries a shaped lever 74, Fig. 11, and when the brake is on, the lever 74 is canted so that a spring-pulled roller 76 rides out upon it to effect a lock. This lever may extend in the opposite direction to lock the clutch drive.
