Abstract
Piston 7, forwarded by actuation of a trigger 3, displaces slidable endwall 5a of cartridge 5 to dispense therefrom a predetermined amount of a first component 6 (which may be a resin component) of a two-component adhesive, into outlet tube 4 whence it may be applied to a desired fixing location (e.g. a borehole for an anchor rod to be fixed in) by way of nozzle 4b. The tube 4 has an entry 4a for introduction therein of separate individual shaped bodies 8 of a second component (which may be a hardener component) one of which is entrained with and dispensed with each dispensation of the first component 6. Each body 8 is matched, in its proportions, with each dispensed amount of the first component 6. After arrival in the borehole, the body 8 can be broken up, and the adhesive components mixed, by introduction of the anchor rod into the borehole. Each body 8 may be formed of compressed powder or may comprise a frangible casing enclosing a liquid adhesive component. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus for dispensing two-component adhesive
This invention concerns apparatus for dispensing, e.g. in dosed amounts, the components of a two component reaction resin adhesive comprising an outlet tube, and a reception space for a cartridge containing one component of the adhesive, as well as filler if desired, and an expressing device for expressing the contents of the cartridge.
Increased use is being made nowadays of twocomponent resin-adhesive systems for adhesive anchorings, for example in the building and like industries, especially where strong fixings are required. These systems possess very good resistance to chemicals, are very firm and have only a slight inclination to deteriorate with age.
Since, however, the two components must not be brought together until shortly before use, in order to avoid premature reaction and, therefore, tooearly hardening, the processing of two component systems is very demanding. Thus, for example, for fastening anchor rods in respective boreholes, multi-compartment cartridges of glass or frangible synthetic materials are used. For each fastening, after a cartridge has been inserted into its borehole, the material of the cartridge is destroyed, usually by driving-in the respective anchor rod, and the two components are mixed with each other in the borehole. Beside the relatively high cost of production, this system has the disadvantage that the cartridges can become broken in transport or whilst being handled. The two components then react with each other prematurely and can no longer be used for making a fastening.
Dispensing apparatus for two-component adhesive systems is also known in which the two components are each poured into a respective cartridge in which they are inserted into the apparatus. When a mechanism is operated a suitable amount of each component is squirted out of the apparatus. Since for the formation of a mixture capable of reacting, as a rule the amounts of the two components to be mixed are neither equal in weight nor in volume, either one of the components must have a neutral filler added to bring the required amounts into equivalence, or the cartridges must have different volumes or sections. Thus, the production of the cartridges is relatively expensive.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple form of apparatus, the operation of which is trouble-free for the processing of a twocomponent reaction resin adhesive system.
In accordance with the invention this is achieved in that the outlet tube has an entry opening for introducing therein the second component, optionally with filler, as a shaped body of predetermined proportion, in relation to the first component.
In the apparatus of the invention, only the first of the adhesive components is accommodated in a large cartridge fitted in the apparatus, while the second component is divided into the individual quantities required for each adhesive fixing. The resin component, which generally constitutes the component having the larger volume, is suitably provided in the cartridge, and the hardener, which as a general rule, usually has a volume which is only fraction of that of the resin, in them provided in the shaped body. One can, however, choose to arrange the components the other way about. The quantity of the component to be released from the cartridge each time is determined by the size of the shaped body and the necessary mixing ratio.
The shaped body, which enters the outlet tube through the entry opening, can be entrained out of the outlet tube by the first component expressed from the cartridge and thereby applied to its place of use, e.g. filled into a borehole into which an anchor rod is to be fixed. If a smaller amount of adhesive is needed, smaller shaped bodies can be used and correspondingly a smaller amount is expressed out of the cartridge.
With adhesive fixing, as with other ways of making fixings, e.g. in civil engineering, serial fastening operations are very often necessary. For a rational way of working it is therefore advantageous if the entry opening is fitted with a magazine for reception of several of the moulded bodies. Supply of the shaped bodies into the outlet tube can then proceed automatically. The magazine may also be connected interchangeably with the apparatus so that quick changing over to another size is possible. An interchangeable magazine reduces time wastage and makes economical working possible.
The two components leaving the outlet tube must be mixed together before use. Such mixture is particularly easy when the system is used to anchor anchor rods into boreholes. To facilitate insertion of the two adhesive components into the borehole, it is suitable if the end of the outlet tube which lies remote from the reception space with regard to the entry opening is designed as a feed socket. By means of such a feed socket the boreholes can be filled with the two components from the bottom upwards. There the inclusions of air, which are determined to fixing, are avoided. By a corresponding design of the feed socket, the borehole can also be closed during the insertion of the components, so that no surplus material can escape from the borehole.
The shaped bodies, suitable for use in the apparatus in accordance with the invention can be designed in various ways. In one advantageous form, and shaped body consists, for example, of compressed powder. Such a construction makes possible particularly economical production of the bodies. Since the two components do not come into contact with each other beforehand, there is no need to encase the shaped body. A shaped body of compressed powder also facilitates the thorough mixing of the components, e.g. in a borehole, since the transformation of the body back into its powdery components during the mixing makes possible homogenious distribution thereof in the resultant mixture.
A further suitable possibility for the second component consists in that said second component is surrounded by a frangible casing.
Such a casing may consist, for example, of glass or of synthetic material which is frangible.
Because of the presence of the casing the second component can be of a material of a more or less fluid form, which again facilitates thorough mixing in the borehole. The remains of the casing can thereby serve as a filler.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the single figure is a partsectional side elevation of a preferred embodiment of the apparatus of the invention.
The illustrated preferred embodiment of the apparatus in accordance with the invention comprises a housing, designed as a whole by the reference numeral 1 having a hand-grip 2 fitted on it at one end. The hand-grip 2 is provided with a trigger 3 for initiating the release of adhesive. In the casing 1 is an outlet tube designated as a whole by the reference numeral 4. Behind the outlet tube 4, cartridge designated as a whole with the numeral 5 is inserted into the housing 1 in a reception space 1 a. The cartridge 5 contains a first component 6 of a two-component resin adhesive, which component may be a resin component. A sliding wall part Sa serves as a rearward seal of the cartridge 5. A piston, designated as a whole with the numeral 7 and disposed so that it can slide in the housing 1, acts on the wall part 5a of the cartridge 5.The piston 7 has a piston rod 7a which is provided with teeth 7b for progressing the piston 7 forward.
The outlet tube 4 is formed with a side entry opening 4a which serves for the introduction of the second component of the two-component adhesive resin into the outlet tube 4. This second component, which may be a hardener component, is divided into individual portions and these are designed as shaped bodies 8. The shaped bodies 8 are fitted into a magazine designated as a whole with the numeral 9. This magazine 9 is fitted to and opens into the entry opening 4a of the outlet tube 4. A sliding carriage 9a, carried in the magazine 9, is biassed towards the outlet tube 4 by a spring 9b. Thereby the foremost shaped body 8 is introduced into the outlet tube 4 from the magazine 9. Each time the trigger 3 is pressed, the piston 7 is stepped in the direction of the outlet pipe 4 by a suitable mechanism (not shown). As a result, a suitable amount of the first adhesive component 6 is forced out of the cartridge 5, through the outlet tube 4, and emerges at the front end of the outlet tube 4 which is designed as a feed socket 4b. The foremost shaped body 8 situated in the outlet tube 4 is expressed from the outlet tube 4 with the amount of the adhesive component 6. The shaped bodies 8 which are situated in the magazine 9 are automatically held back by the pressure thereby engendered in the adhesive. When this pressure relaxes, the next foremost moulded body 8 is introduced into the outlet tube 4 by the spring 9b and the sliding carriage 9a.
