Abstract
A method for producing labels bearing respective elements of information, an example being addressed labels from a mailing list, involves preparing a programme on punched tape for a telex machine, such that the machine will type out the addresses or other elements of information in spaced formation. The conventional paper feed in the machine is then replaced by a web formed with labels, the arrangement of which corresponds to said spaced formation. The telex machine can then be operated under the control of the programme to type out the labels as many times as is required.
Description
SPECIFICATION
A method for producing labels
This invention relates to labels and particularly to a method for producing labels bearing respective elements of information.
One particular example of the use of this invention is in the production of addressed labels for use in sending out catalogues and similar items at regular intervals to persons on a mailing list. It is inconvenient and time-consuming for labels to be typed individually each time an edition of the catalogue is sent out and whilst addressing machines of various sorts are available, these are generally expensive.
In one form, the present invention seeks to provide a method of addressing labels which is both simple and economical. Accordingly, the present invention consists in a method for producing labels bearing respective elements of information, comprising the steps of preparing a programme under the control of which type-writing apparatus will type said elements of information in spaced formation; loading programmable type-writing apparatus with a web formed with labels and operating the apparatus in accordance with the programme to type the elements of information on respective labels, the programme being such that the said spaced formation corresponds with the arrangement of labels in the web.
Suitably, the programmable type-writing apparatus comprises a telex machine controllable by a programme on punched tape.
Advantageously, the web formed with labels comprises a roll of release material carrying selfadhesive labels.
A method according to this invention for producing addressed labels will now be described by way of example, it being understood that the invention is also applicable to labels bearing elements of information other than addresses.
The conventional paper reel in a telex machine is replaced by a roll of self-adhesive labels carried two abreast on release paper, the roll being conveniently formed on a cardboard core. To facilitate mounting of the label roll in the telex machine, a core holder can be provided, adapted at its ends to cooperate with the reel holding elements of the telex machine and fashioned at its centre to conform with the interior dimensions of the core of the label roll.
The addresses in the mailing list are then typed out on the telex machine, with the telex operating in the punched tape producing mode. The addresses are typed in pairs across the width of the label roll leaving gaps between adjacent addresses both transversely and longitudinally of the paper so that one address appears on each label. When all the addresses in the mailing list have been correctly typed out, the punched tape is carefully collected.
To produce further labels, the prepared punched tape is fed into the tape reader of the telex machine and with the roll of labels arranged so that typing will comence at or near the top of a label, the telex machine is set in operation and will without further intervention from the operator type out the addresses on the respective labels. It will be understood that once a punched tape has been prepared for a set of labels from a mailing list, it represents a programme from which the corresponding set of addressed labels can be produced repetitively with no further manual typing being required. If the same punched tape is to be used a large number of times, it may be desirable to form the tape in a material more durable than the conventional paper, possible a plastics material. It will be appreciated that when the punched tape is being prepared, it is possible to run the telex machine with plain paper in place so that no labels are actually produced when the punched tape programme is being prepared. The disadvantage of this alternative procedure is that care has to be taken to ensure that the addresses are typed at transverse and longitudinal spacings corresponding with the spacing of labels in the label roll. On the other hand, any errors which may appear in the original typing of the addresses can be corrected in the punched tape without labels being wasted.
If necessary, labels can be arranged on the web of release paper in orientations other than the two abreast formation described above and in certain cases it may be helpful to provide marks on the web and in the telex machine which can be used to ensure correct registration of the label roll at the commencement of typing. To provide proof of dispatch, the web of release paper can be arranged to retain a record of the addresses typed on the labels. If desired, the punched tape programme can be fed into a telex machine remote from the machine which is loaded with the label roll and the programme transmitted by telex. In certain applications, labels other than self-adhesive labels can be employed; the web for example could be formed from material perforated at intervals to enable subse quentdivision of the web into labels by tearing along the perforations.
This invention has been illustrated by the application to addressed labels, but it is not to be regarded as limited to this application. The invention is applicable to a variety of situations in which labels are required to carry respective elements of information, the invention being of course most useful when - as in the case with addresses - the element of information on each label is unique. Other applications of the invention which are envisaged are the addition of pricing information to pre-printed selfadhesive labels; the production of labels for attachment to work pieces to indicate the stages in a programme of work or maintenance and the production of labels for easy attachment to stationery items such as filing cards and medical records. In one envisaged application, a continuous roll of transverse self-adhesive strips is employed with each strip being suitably spaced to hold one line of telex output and the roll being so arranged that the strips are connected at each end by an amount sufficient to allow either separate removal of single lines by tearing off each strip at say 8" at each end or removal of a label containing a number of lines of telex output. A variety of other applications will suggest themselves to the skilled reader.
The invention has been described by way of example with the use of a telex machine since such machines are widely available. It is conceivable, however, that methods according to this invention could be carried out using other programmable type-writing apparatus.
