Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in and Relating to Fastening Equipment for Masonry This invention relates to a fastening element consisting of plastics material for fastening an article to masonry, which comprises an anchoring part having locking elements, an inner bore for screwing in a fastening screw and an opening into the gap between the wall of the drilled hole and the external wall of the fastening element for the injection of a cementing material for anchoring the fastening element.
For many applications, especially when fastening an understructure for the attachment of facing panels, a push-thrnugh mounting is advantageous from the point of view of the mounting sequence, wherein, after making the drilled hole in the masonry, the fastening element is inserted into the hole drilled in the masonry through the article to be fastened and anchored from the front side of the article to be fastened.
Such fastening elements which allow a pushthrough mounting are known. These, however, are fastening elements that are anchored by retracting an expansion member by means of a fastening screw or directly by screwing the fastening screw into a tapering inner bore of the fastening element. This method of anchoring, however, is unsuitable or only insufficiently suitable for porous masonry and masonry comprising cavity bricks. In building materials of this kind, therefore, fastening elements that are anchored by injecting a cementing material, for example a cement mixture, around their anchoring part are used.
An object of the invention is to make possible a push-through mounting for the fastening of articles in the case of fastening elements of this kind.
According to the invention, this is achieved by the fastening elements being provided with a sleeve-like extension which projects beyond the drilled hole and engages into the article to be fastened, the inner bore of the fastening element having a seal which can be detached or punctured, and by a sleeve having an abutment for supporting the article to be fastened being movable in the extension.
To carry out the mounting operation, first a hole is drilled in the article to be fastened, the diameter of which hole corresponds to the external diameter of the extension of the fastening element. In the case of articles, for example supporting strips, having several drilied holes, this article is used as a kind of drilling template for drilling the holes in the masonry. The fastening element is then inserted into the hole drilled in the masonry through the holes drilled in the article to be fastened, whilst the extension of the fastening elements engages with, or into the article to be fastened and fixes it. The fastening element is anchored by injecting cementing material which is supplied by means of a syringe device. In order to keep the extension free of cementing material for the subsequent insertion of the fastening screw, the syringe device has a nozzle the external diameter of which corresponds to the internal diameter of the extension and which extends as far as the front of the anchoring part of the fastening element. Thus, the front of the nozzle rests directly on the filling opening of the fastening element. Since the inner bore of the fastening element which is provided for screwing in the fastening screw is provided with a seal which may be detached or punctured, the cementing material, when being injected, can penetrate only the filling opening in the gap between the external wall of the fastening element and the wall of the drilled hole. The inner bore thus remains free of cementing material thereby allowing the fastening screw to be screwed in.After withdrawing the syringe device and allowing the cementing material to set, the sleeve provided with an abutment for supporting the article to be fastened is pushed through the sleeve and the seal arranged over the inner bore is pressed in or punctured.
By screwing the fastening screw into the inner bore of the fastening element the sleeve is pressed into the extension by the head of the fastening screw and the article is thus fastened by means of the abutment arranged on the sleeve.
All the tasks necessary for anchoring and mounting the article can thus be carried out from the front of the article to be fastened. A simpie method of mounting articles on porous masonry and masonry having cavities is thus achieved which can be performed quickly and, therefore, at a reasonable cost.
In a further form of the invention, the seal of the inner bore of the fastening element may be formed by an injectionmoulded skin. The injection-moulded skin can easily be punctured by the tip of the fastening screw. The injectionmoulded skin also offers resistance to the screwing in of the fastening screw, and this resistance can be so adapted by a corresponding thickness of the injection-moulded skin that it is possible to check the setting of the cementing material. If, when screwing the screw through the injection-moulded skin, the plug also turns, this indicates that the cementing material has not yet set completely.
Advantageously, the inner bore may be provided with longitudinal internal ribs into which the thread of the fastening screw is able to cut.
This also prevents defective mounting resulting from screwing in the fastening screw too soon since, if the fastening screw is screwed in too soon, the plug will also turn on account of the resistance to the screwing in.
Advantageously, an expandable, fabric-like sheath can be drawn over the anchoring part, which sheath is fastened to the fastening element by a cap at the lead-in end and by a collar at the rear end of the anchoring part. The sheath, on the one hand, limits the amount of cementing material introduced into masonry provided with cavities and, on the other hand, owing to the bulging structure formed around the fastening element by injection provides an anchoring which is capable of absorbing high stresses.
Advantageously, the cap may be provided with a point. The point is intended to facilitate the insertion and penetration of the fastening element into the hole drilled in the masonry especially when insulation matting is also applied to the masonry.
The external diameter of the extension may with advantage be greater than the external diameter of the anchoring part. This results in a stop shoulder which by resting on the surface of the masonry allows the correct anchoring depth to be set and enables forces of pressure to be absorbed.
Advantageously, a stop means which holds the article to be fastened at a distance from the masonry may be arranged on the extension. The stop means makes spaced mounting possible in those cases where the article to be fastened is not fastened to a sub-structure lying against the surface of the masonry.
In order that push-through mounting can be carried out despite the stop means, the stop means may, with advantage be in the form of resiliently yielding projections arranged on the circumference of the extension. These projections spring back against the rear side of the substructure for the article to be fastened so that the rear faces of the projections form the support for the article to be fastened.
The abutment of the sleeve can with advantage be formed by a countersunk head. The countersunk head of the sleeve permits an assembly which is flush with the front of the article to be fastened. As a result of the countersunk head pressing against the article to be fastened, on the one hand, and the telescopiclike penetration of the sleeve into the extension, on the other hand, a complete and corrosionproof seal of the fastening screw is produced.
Only the free face of the screwhead remains to be protected against corrosion, for example by a coat of paint.
The present invention also provides fastening equipment for fastening an article to masonry, the equipment comprising fastening element having an elongate body provided with an anchoring portion for insertion into a hole in the masonry and a sleeve portion for projecting from the hole, the anchoring portion having a longitudinal bore for receiving a fastening screw or bolt, the bore having a seal at its end remote from the insertion end of the element, the element having an opening for providing communication between the interior of the sleeve portion and the outside of the anchoring portion, the equipment further comprising a sleeve for receiving the screw or bolt and which is insertable through a hole in the article to be fastened into engagement with the sleeve portion and which has a projection for engaging the article.
Fastening equipment constructed in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows the fastening element of the equipment inserted in the masonry with a syringe or injection device attached, and Figure 2 shows the fastening equipment after anchoring and mounting of the article to be fastened.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, a fastening element 1 consists of two portions, namely an anchoring portion 3 for insertion in the masonry 2 (in the form of a cavity brick) and a sleeve portion 6 which projects from the masonry and is engageable in a bore formed in a substructure 4 (for example, in the form of insulating matting). The anchoring position 3 is provided with locking elements in the form of ribs or flanges 7 to boost the anchoring effect.
An expandable, fabric-like sheath 8 can be drawn over the anchoring portion 3 especially when the fastening element is used in porous masonry or masonry provided with cavities, which sheath makes it possible to inject fixing agent (which may, for example be cement or a foamed plastic material) around the anchoring portion to form a localised bulging structure as shown in Figure 2. The sheath 8 is held on the anchoring portion 3 by a cap 9 at the insertion end of the fastening element, which cap has a pointed tip 10 to facilitate the insertion of the fastening element into the drilled hole, and especially through the sub-structure. The sheath 8 is held at the rear end of the anchoring portion by a collar 11.
In order to mount an article 5, first a hole 12 is drilled in the article, the diameter of which hole corresponds to the external diameter of the sleeve portion 6. A hole 13 in the masonry 2 and a corresponding hole in the sub-structure 4 are then formed by drilling through the hole 12. In order to achieve accurate alignment of the two drilled holes 12 and 13, it is expedient to insert a drilling sleeve into the larger hole 12 in order to guide the drill. The fastening element 1 is then introduced into the hole drilled in the masonry through the hole 12 in the article 5 and the hole in the substructure 4. Owing to the iarger external diameter of the sleeve portion 6 as compared with the diameter of the anchoring portion 3 of the fastening element 1 a stop shoulder 14 is formed which serves to limit the extent of insertion of the fastening element 1. As the fastening element 1 is pushed in projections 1 5 provided at the rear end of the sleeve portion 6, which act as stop means for keeping the article 5 to be fastened at a distance, yieldably engage the rear end of the hole in the sub-structure. The end faces of these projections 1 5 form a stop-especially if no substructure 4 is provided-for keeping the article 5 at a given distance from the masonry 2.
The fixing agent is then injected through a filling opening 27 (providing communication between the interior of the sleeve portion 6 and the outside of the anchoring portion 3) and into the sheath 8 by means of a syringe or injection device 16 the nozzle 17 of which is inserted into the sleeve portion until it engages the rear end of the anchoring portion 3.
An inner bore 1 8 (for receiving a fixing screw 20) of the fastening element 1 is sealed off by means of an injection-moulded skin or membrane 19, and consequently the inner bore 1 8 is kept free of fixing agent during its injection into the sheath 8. The interior space 21 of the sleeve portion 6 is kept free of fixing agent by the nozzle 1 7 which closely fits into that space.
When the fixing agent has set or hardened a sleeve 23 which is provided with a countersunk head 22 is pushed into the sleeve portion 6. The fastening screw 20 is then introduced through the bore 24 of the sleeve 23, and, after puncturing the injection-moulded skin 1 9 is screwed into the inner bore 1 8 of the anchoring portion 3. Further to resist withdrawal of the screw 20 from the element 1 the bore 1 8 is provided with longitudinally extending internal ribs 25. As a result of the screwing-in operation, the sleeve 23 is moved towards the opening of the drilled hole 13 in the masonry by the head 26 of the fastening screw 20 and in so doing the article 5 is braced against the outspread projections 1 5 by the countersunk head 22 of the sleeve 23.
