Abstract

In a dispensing device for dispensing liquid from a container a body 10 is mounted by a tubular rear portion 11 in the wall 12 of the container. The body 10 is secured to the wall 12 by means of a nut 15 bearing against a flange 14 through a pair of cup washers 16 and O-rings 17. A valve stem 21 extends through the body 10 and is guided by a forward end 20 of the body. At the rear end of the stem 21 there is a head 22 which forms a poppet-valve cooperating with a seating 23 formed by the rear end of the body 10. At the forward end of the valve stem there is a block 24 which is biased by a helical spring 25 to close the poppet-valve. A lever 35 is pivoted about a fixed pivot 36 and is connected to block 24 by toggle link 39. When the lever has passed dead centre position, in which pivots 36, 38 and 40 are in line the lever 35 or link 39 bears against a stop (not shown) to hold the valve in the open position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Dispensing cocks This invention relates to dispensing cocks and is concerned with the provision of a convenient form of cock for dispensing liquid from a container.
According to the present invention a dispensing cock for dispensing liquid from a container includes a poppet-valve, a spring tending to close the valve, and a manual operating lever connected to the valve through a toggle linkage arranged to pass over a dead centre to hold the valve open.
In one form of the invention for mounting in a substantially vertical wall, the cock has a body with a rear tubular portion to extend horizontally into the container with a seating at its rear end, and a forward position affording a guide for a valve stem carrying at its rear end a head engaging the seating and at its front end a block to which one link of the toggle linkage is pivoted, the spring being a compression spring interposed between the block and the body. Conveniently the body affords a discharge spout extending obliquely downwards and forwards from the front end of the rear portion of the body. The hand lever may be pivoted to a fixed part and have an extension beyond its fixed pivot whilst a toggle link has opposite ends pivoted respectively to the block and the extension of the handle. The parts may be arranged so that the handle extends substantially horizontally in the dead centre position.
The toggle linkage may include a lost motion connection. For example it may comprise a link having a pin and slot connection at one or each end. Thus in one arrangement the handle has means for holding it in a substantially vertical position whence the lost motion permits it to move to an inclined position before starting to open the valve.
Further features and details of the invention will be apparent from the following description of one specific embodiment that will be given by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the single figure is a diagrammatic sectional elevation of a dispensing cock embodying the invention, shown in a partially open position.
The cock comprises a body 10 having 2 tubular rear portion 11 to extend through a hole in a wall 12 of a container. The body has a flange 14 and a screw-threaded end portion receiving a nut 1 5 whereby the wall 1 2 is gripped between the flange 14 and the nut 1 5 with the interposition of a pair of cup washers 1 6 and O-rings 17.
The forward end 20 forms a guide for a valve stem 21 carrying at its rear end a head 22 forming a poppet-valve co-operating with a seating 23 formed by the rear end of the body. At its rear end the valve stem 21 carries a block 24 and a helical spring 25 is interposed between a front surface of the body and the rear surface of the block 24 with the interposition of sealing washers 26 and 27.
From the front end of the rear portion of the body a spout 30 extends downwards and forwards for dispensing liquid.
For opening the valve a hand lever 35 is pivoted about a fixed pivot 36 carried by fixed parts not shown. The handle has an extension 37 extending beyond the pivot 36 and carrying a pin 38 connected by a pin and slot connection to one end of a toggle link 39. The other rear end of the link 39 is pivoted at 40 to the block 24.
The operation of the cock is as follows: Under normal conditions the hand lever 35 extends substantially vertically and the helical spring 25 pushes the block 24 forwards to hold the valve 22 against the seating 23 and close it. From this position the hand lever can be moved forward to an inclined position due to the lost motion provided by the pin 38 in the slot in the toggle link 39 so as to assume a more convenient position before it is necessary to exert any force to open -the valve. Further downward movement of the hand lever causes the toggle linkage to force the block 24 rearwards and begin to open the valve.
The valve reaches its fully opened position as the hand lever reaches a horizontal position which is also a dead centre position. After passing the dead centre position the handle encounters a stop not shown so that it can be left with the valve open.
1. A dispensing device for dispensing liquid from a container including a poppet-valve, a spring tending to close the valve, and an operating lever connected to the valve through a toggle linkage arranged to pass over a dead centre to hold the valve open.
2. A device as claimed in Claim 1 which is mounted in a vertical wall of the container, the device including a body with a rear tubular portion extending horizontally into the container and having a seating at its rear end, and a forward portion affording a guide for a valve stem carrying at its rear end a head engaging the seating and at its front end a block to which one link of the toggle linkage is pivoted, the spring being a compression spring interposed between the block and the body.
3. A device as claimed in Claim 2 in which the operating lever is pivoted to a fixed part and has an extension beyond its fixed pivot, whilst the toggle link has opposite ends pivoted respectively to the block and the extension of the lever.
4. A device as claimed in Claim 3 in which the operating lever extends substantially horizontally in the dead centre position.
5. A device as claimed in Claim 4 in which a stop prevents the operating lever moving in one of the upward or downward directions after it has left the dead centre position so that, in use, the valve may be left open.
6. A device as claimed in any preceding claim in which the toggle linkage includes a lost motion connection.
