Description
SPECIFICATION
A hinge means for a top-hung window or the like
This invention relates to a top-hung window or similar building component.
Top-hung windows, lids and similar building components are difficult to install when using conventional hinges, where the flanges are separable by axial displacement along the hinge pin.
The window sash ought not to make contact with the sill of the frame, when it is swung outwards, and it is therefore necessary, especially with low windows, to provide a marked clearance between the sash and the sill. Conventional hinges will furthermore be attached to the frame and to the sash, respectively, so the weight of the sash will act in the longitudinal direction of the screws securing the hinge flanges. After some time the hinge will tend to loose its grip, and the frame will sag down to rest upon the sill.
During opening and closing movements the sash must be maintained in a proper lateral position, but with conventional hinges the sash may edge sidewards so one vertical side thereof may grind against the juxtaposed frame member.
The mounting and dismounting, respectively, of a sash can be difficult, as it is necessary to hold the sash approximately at right angles to the frame while simultaneously pushing the sash sidewards trying to fit the free hinge flanges upon the pins held by the fixed flanges.
The parts around the pin of the hinges will have an exposed position and are subject to the influence of the surrounding atmosphere, so they will rapidly become rusted. It is furthermore difficult to arrange the parts in such a manner that the sealing gaskets will be uniformly compressed in an efficient manner.
The object of the present invention is to propose a hinge means which removes the disadvantages above referred to, and presents a strong, easily operable fitting, which permits an efficient compression of the sealing gaskets all around the sash.
According to the invention a hinge means for a top-hung window or similar building component comprises a gudgeon carrying hinge member for attachment to the window sash and a grooved counterpart member for attachment to the frame, characterised in that the hinge member, attachable to the sash, comprises two gudgeons arranged at a mutual distance in the plane of the sash, and that the counterpart member, at the frame is provided with a first, vertical groove portion having a length at least corresponding to the distance between the centres of the gudgeons, plus twice the gudgeon radius, as well as a second groove portion communicating with a lower end of the first groove portion and being inclined downwardly/outwardly.
The bottom of the first groove portion preferably forms an inside support face of limited angular extension for the lower of the two gudgeons, in use, and then merges into the second groove portion.
Means are preferably provided to block the movement of the sash so the upper gudgeon in a normal airing position of the window is prevented from leaving the first, vertical groove portion.
In order to facilitate the removal of the sash from the frame the second groove portion is preferably open towards the outward face of the sash. The means for blocking the opening movement of the sash may then comprise removable elements for closing the mouth of the second groove portion at the frame. Alternatively a pocket for receiving the lower gudgeon may be arranged in the lower margin of the second groove portion.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows an elevation of a window having hinge means according to the invention,
Figure 2, 3 and 4 show the sash in different positions in relation to the frame,
Figures 5-7 show, on a larger scale, a preferred embodiment of the two members of the hinge means and in positions corresponding to those of Figures 2-4.
Figure 1 shows a window of an ordinary type having a sash 10 supported in a frame 11 by means of two hinges 12 fitted near the upper ends of the side members of the frame and sash, respectively. It is desirable that the window sash be governed in relation to the frame during each step of the opening and closing movements, which is obtainable due to the special design of the members of the hinge means.
Figures 2, 3 and 4 show vertical sections through the frame and sash and schematically illustrate the operation of the hinge. Figure 2 shows the sash in a closed position, Figure 3 shows the opened sash, and Figure 4 shows the sash removed from the frame. The two main components of the hinge will be described in detail in relation to Figures 5-7, but especially in
Figure 4 it is evident that a hinge member 14 attached to the sash comprises two gudgeons 1 5 and 16, while a counterpart member 17 at the frame is provided with a groove for these gudgeons and including a first, vertical portion 1 8 and a second, downwardly/outwardly inclined portion 1 9.
The window sash should automatically be blocked in a maximum of airing position, and to that end it is desirable that the upper gudgeon should not leave the vertical groove portion 1 8.
The second groove portion 1 9 may basically be closed at its outward end in a suitable position to support the lower gudgeon. In order to facilitate a removal of the sash the hinge means is then formed as a box structure attached to the sash and having means for locking to the frame upon mounting.
Figures 5-7 show a preferred embodiment of the hinge, where the second groove portion, in order to facilitate the fitting and the removal of the casement, is open towards the outer face of the frame.
Blocking of the opening movement of the sash may be obtained by means of a casement stay between the sash and the frame, or it is possible to apply removable elements, which close the mouth of the groove outward, and furthermore support for the lower gudgeon so the upper gudgeon cannot leave the vertical groove portion.
With the embodiments of Figures 5-7 the blocking is obtained by means of a pocket provided in the lower margin of lower groove portion. The gudgeon carrying member 14, which will be located above the plane of the drawing, is denoted by broken lines.
The two gudgeons 1 5 and 16 are arranged at a mutual distance apart in the plane of the sash. The first groove portion 1 8 in the counterpart member at the frame is vertically arranged, and has an extension at least corresponding to the spacing between the gudgeons 1 5 and 16, plus twice the radius of the gudgeons.
The dimensions of the gudgeons, the mutual distance and the location thereof, as well as the dimensions, the shape and locations of the groove portions are determined in such a manner that the sash during its movements will be guided so it does not contact the frame, neither upwards nor at its lower transverse member. Either hinge member at the sash or the frame, respectively, is mounted in such a manner that it will project somewhat outside the member to which it is fitted, whereby the sash will be guided also transversely not to ( < ontact the frame.
The upper end of the vertical groove portion 1 8 is located in such a manner that gudgeon 1 5 can be forced upwards sufficient to permit the upper, horizontal member of the sash to compress a gasket at the upper member of the frame. The lower gudgeon 1 6 will in this position rest upon a support face 20 having a limited angular extension, which, however, is sufficient to prevent the sash from sinking down to come into contact with the sill of the frame. The bottom of the upper groove portion 1 8 merges with a slight inclination 21 into the lower groove portion 19.The inclination of portion 21 is about 20 , which is sufficient to guarantee that the sash during the initial opening movement will be lowered some millimetres, whereby the top member of the sash is disengaged from its gasket at the frame top member.
During an opening movement gudgeon 1 5 will slide along the lower margin 22 of the lower groove portion 1 9 and finally reaches the bottom 23 of this groove portion, where the gudgeon will have a satisfactory support. The length of the second groove portion 1 9 corresponds about to the spacing between gudgeons 1 5 and 16, which means that the upper gudgeon 1 5 in the maximum open position will not leave the vertical portion of the upper groove 18, but will remain just above support face 20.
In order to make possible a removal of the sash the counterpart member of the hinge is provided with an opening 24, which extends to the lower groove portion 1 9 somewhat above guide surface 23 for the lower gudgeon. To remove the sash from the frame it is necessary that the gudgeons
1 5 and 1 6 from the position shown in Figure 6 are pushed somewhat backwards and thereafter are lifted out through opening 24.
The embodiment above shown and described is an example only of the invention, and it is evident that the members of the hinge for attachment to the frame and to the sash may be varied in many ways in order to meet demands of different manufactures concerning the profiles to be used in sash and frame, and to desired properties at the window. This will be maintained in closed position by a locking mechanism, not shown, which is adapted to force the sash against gaskets provided at the sill and the side members of the frame.
