Abstract

A weather excluder for a door sill comprises a rigid seal support member of elongate form having a front leg 13 which in use of the excluder projects upwardly and is provided at its free end with a longitudinal recess 15 for holding a flexible seal 26 which engages the front surface 32 of a door 30 when the latter is closed. The support member also includes a rear leg 14 which extends transversely of the front leg 13 beneath the bottom edge 33 of the closed door. The rear leg 14 may hold a second flexible seal 26a to provide a second line of defence against water or draughts passing the front seal 26, and is preferably inclined to the horizontal so as to form a channel 24 with the front leg 13. The channel 24 receives water which may pass the front seal 26 and such water is drained through drain holes 25. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A weather excluder for use with door sills This invention relates to a weather excluder for use with door sills and in particularto an excluder which is adapted to accommodate a weather seal which prevents the passage of water/draughts under the door with which said excluder is operatively associated.
The present invention provides a weather excluder for use with a door sill, the excluder comprising a rigid seal support member of elongate form having a front leg which in use of the extruder projects substantially upwardly and is provided at its free end with a longitudinally extending recess, the recess being adapted to locate and hold in position along its length a flexible seal which engages the front surface of a door when the door is closed, and a rear leg which in use of the extruder extends transversely of the front leg beneath the bottom edge of the closed door.
Preferably, the free end of the rear leg is also provided with a longitudinally extending recess, the further recess being adapted to locate and hold in position along its length a further flexible seal which engages the bottom edge of the door when the door is closed.
Preferably, also, the rear leg is inclined upwardly so as to form with the front leg a channel for the reception of water which may pass the firstmentioned seal.
The invention will be understood from the following description of embodiments thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accom panying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a seal support member of an embodiment of a weather excluder of the present invention; Figure 2 is a sectional end view of the weather excluder showing the flexible seal in a non-sealing position; Figure 3 is a sectional end view of the weather excluder with the associated door being shown in a closed position in sealing contact with the flexible seal; Figures 4, 5and 6areviews similar to Figures 1, 2 and 3 respectively of a second embodiment of the invention; Figure 7 is a rear perspective view of a seal support member of a third embodiment of the invention; Figure 8 is an end elevation of the seal support member of Figure 7; and Figure 9 is an end elevation of a weather excluder and a fourth embodiment of the invention.
Referring to Figure 1 of the accompanying draw ings, there is illustrated a seal support member of a weather excluder for use with a door sill. The support member is an extruded aluminium section and comprises two legs, a front leg 13 and a rear leg 14 which contain between them an approximate 80 angle. In use the front leg 13 projects substantially vertically upward, while the rear leg 14 projects tranversely from the front leg 13 rearwardly therefrom in a slightly upward direction. Thus the overall shape of the support member defines a channel 24 which is provided with one or more drainage holes 25 in the front leg.
The free upper end of the front leg 13 is provided with a longitudinally extending recess 15 defined by recess walls 16 and 17. The recess 15 locates and holds in position along its longitudinal length a flexible moulded neoprene rubber seal, for example as shown in Figures 2 and 3. The seal consists of a recess engaging portion 26 and integral strip-like sealing fingers 27 and 28. The extruder is supported on stand sections 10 and 20 disposed beneath the channel 24 and at the free end of the leg 14 respectively, each stand section comprising a pair of downwardly divergent lugs 11, 12 and 22,23.
The weather excluder described above may be incorporated in a door sill formed on a concrete floor or on a wooden floor. In both cases the lugs 11, 12, 22 and 23 engage the said floor and in the case of a concrete floor base - as shown in Figure 3 - the lugs 11,12,22 and 23 are embedded in a concrete filling 29. In the case of a wooden floor base the excluder is secured in position using a mastic filling between the lugs 11 and 12 and the lugs 22 and 23. When the weather excluder is in its operative position relative to the associated door sill, channel end seals 31 are fitted to the relevant sill/wall area to prevent any water seepage from the channel 24 into the adjacent wall portion of the building. The end seals 31 also hold the excluder in position while the sealing and/or bedding compounds cure.
Referring to Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings, the configuration of the flexible seal in its sealing position is illustrated. The door 30 has a front surface 32 and an underneath or bottom edge 33 and when the door 30 is in the closed position the flexible seal is deformed such that the sealing finger 27 engages the front surface 32 of the door 30 and the sealing finger 28 engages the exterior surface of the recess wall 16. The sealing finger 27 is presented to the front surface 32 of the door at an angle to the horizontal of between 10-90 depending on the end shape of the blade preferably the angle is within the range 45 -60 .
The sealing finger 27 directs any water running down the front surface 32 of the door 30 onto the sealing finger 28 and which in turn directs the water onto and over the recess wall 16 of the recess 15. The sealing finger 28 prevents any water or draught passing down the inside of the recess wall 16 and into the recess 15. Any water which does gain access to the channel 24 will drain away to the ground through the drainage hole 25 at the bottom of the channel.
Figures 4 to 6 illustrate a second embodiment of the invention similar to the first Figures 5 and 6 including a second sealing strip, for which purpose the free end of the rear leg 14 is provided with a circular longitudinal recess 18 defined by recess walls 19 and 20.
The recess 18 locates and holds in position along its longitudinal length a further flexible mounted neoprene rubber seal identical in shape to the seal in the recess 15 and consisting of a recess engaging portion 26a and integral sealing fingers 27a and 28a.
Referring to Figure 6 of the drawings, the configuration of flexible seals in their sealing positions is illustrated. As before, when the door 30 is in the closed position the front flexible seal is deformed such that the sealing finger 27 engages the front surface 32 of the door 30 and the sealing finger 28 engages the exterior surface of the recess wall 16.
Furthermore, however, the sealing finger 27a engages the bottom edge 33 of the door 30 and the sealing finger 28a engages the leg 14. The sealing fingers 27a and 28a thus present a second line of defence and act to stop any water or draught which may pass the front seal from passing under the door 30.
Referring to Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings the seal support member is similar to the embodiment illustrated in Figures 4 to 6 of the accompanying drawings except that the front leg 13 of the seal support member is curved substantially upwardly.
The curvature of the front leg 13 imparts a substantially oval configuration to the channel 24.
Referring to Figure 9 of the drawings the seal support member illustrated has the same curved front leg 13 of the previous embodiment. In this embodiment the rear leg 14 is not provided with a longitudinally recess for accomodating a sealing strip - rather the free end of the said rear leg 14 is provided with a longitudinally extending lip member 34. The function of the said lip member 34 is to prevent the passage of any water which may gain access to the channel 24 from being forced past the end of the rear leg 14.
It will be readily appreciated that the seal support member may be moulded of any metal or rigid plastics material. Further the flexible seals may be of any suitable sealing material. The rain or draught excluder of the present embodiment allows easy maintenance and in particular ease of replacement of the relevant flexible seal(s); since the seal(s) are deformable and elastic they can be easily removed from the locating/holding recesses and new replacement seal(s) inserted into the recesses as required.
