Abstract
204,338. Marrian, H. H. B., and Carver, E. E. Sept. 23, 1922, [Convention date]. Overhead travellers and transporters. - The transporter comprises towers 1, 2, 3, 4 erected at the corners of a parallelogram supporting cables 18, 19 which support, guide, and maintain in compression a traversing beam 5, and form a double cable track beneath the beam 5 for a load trolly 21. The cable 18 passes from the tower 1, round sheaves 6, 7 at opposite ends of the beam and to the tower 4 diagonally opposite to 1. The cable 19 passes similarly from 2 to 3 round sheaves 8. 9. The beam can therefore only be moved parallel to itself and is always in compression. Guidepulleys 13 on the beam run on the cables 18, 19. and additional supporting cables may run direct from 1 to 3 and from 2 to 4. Additional towers may be used to reduce the sag of the cables. The beam 5 is traversed by a cable 31 which passes round a winding drum 37 and round sheaves on the towers 1 and 3 and is attached at each end to one end of the beam. The load trolley comprises pairs of plates 21 carrying pairs of sheaves 22 which run on the cables 18, 19, and sheaves 23 for the load rope. The two pairs of plates 21 are connected by pivoted links 24 to hinge pins 25 carrying sheaves 26, 26<a> for the cross-traversing cable 29. This cable is secured to the tower 1, passes round sheaves 10, 26. 10 on the beam and trolley, then to tower 3, winding drum 36, tower 4, sheaves 11, 26<a>, 11 on the beam and trolley, and is secured to tower 2. The hoisting cable 34 is secured to the tower 2, passes round a sheave 16 on the beam 5, sheaves 23, 28, 23 on the trolley and load block, a second sheave 16 on the beam, a sheave on the tower 3, and the winding drum 38. The winding drums 36, 37, 38 for traversing the trolley, for traversing the beam, and for hoisting respectively, are operated independently, and the operation of any one does not affect either of the others, e.g. traversing the beam or the trolley does not raise or lower the load.
