Abstract

203,964. Newman, Ltd., W. H., and Vale, T. H. Nov. 23, 1922. Tobacco pipes.-To prevent entry of dirt &c., the passage in the mouthpiece is adapted to be closed by a rotatable member which can be turned to uncover the passage when required. As shown, the mouthpiece bore 4 terminates in two diverging passages 5 which emerge at opposite ends of a flat face. Midway between these,passages is an integral central screw-pin 6 on which screws an elliptical closure member 7 formed with a flat inner face, so that when screwed home it closes the ends of the passages 5, but when rotated through half a turn it leaves a narrow space 8 for the smoke. The piece 7 corresponds in shape with the end of the mouthpiece and is rounded on its outer side. It may be prevented from becoming completely detached by heading over the end of the screw-pin 6 or otherwise. In the case of a mouthpiece having a single central passage, the closure member 7 mav be formed with a hollow central screw-pin with side exits for the smoke; or the passage may terminate in an externally screwed sleeve, cut away at one side, and engaged by a tapped hole in the closure member. The minor axis of the member 7 is preferably less than the distance between the ends of the passages 5, so that these are exposed for cleaning when the member 7 is rotated through a quarter turn.
