Abstract

The seat (2) for vehicles, machines and the like, damped by means of one or more springs (8), may be set at a given initial level in view of different loads in order to optimize the available travel of the spring. At least one hydraulic jack (6) is supporting the spring(s) in order to allow easy and quick setting of the initial level. The seat is provided with a sensor (9) indicating the level of the seat and operating as the sensor of an adjusting device which controls the hydraulic jack, thereby providing for a given average level of the seat. The adjusting device operates for a short time in order to match the spring tension against the weight of a person sitting on the seat and, by means of valves (11) connects the hydraulic jack with a pressurized fluid (13) or with a return pipe until the displacement of the spring support brings the spring at its initial level. After the support is locked at its new position and the adjusting device starts to operate, the damping of the seat matches the new load.
