Abstract
Oils &c. are desulphurized or otherwise purified by bringing the liquid or vapour into intimate contact with material consisting of, carrying, or containing both one or more of the metals copper, zinc, cadmium, or iron, and one or more of an oxide, halide, or oxyhalide of the metal or metals. In an example, 12 lb. of copper turnings or filings are heated in air until partially coated with oxide or oxides, and then agitated with 100 lb. of shale oil of high sulphur content. The oil is separated by filtration. In a second example, oil is filtered through a hot mixture of copper, copper oxide, and cuprous chloride obtained by heating granulated copper oxide with 10 per cent of salammoniac and 5 per cent of a paraffin lubricating oil. Pumice, bauxite, or similar carrier may be coated, impregnated, or mixed with the purifying agent. For example, granular or powdered bauxite is impregnated with a 10 per cent solution of copper acetate and heated so as to leave a mixture of copper and its oxides distributed therein. The Provisional Specifications also state that materials of a porous nature, such as manganese dioxide, magnesium carbonate or silicate, iron oxide or silicate, and coarse copper oxide, can be used as carriers for copper or an oxide of copper; and that copper can be used in conjunction with its sub-chloride, sub-bromide, or sub-iodide.
