Abstract
An optical fibre cable suitable for underwater use consists essentially of a metal-reinforced matrix 32 of, for example, polypropylene, which surrounds the optical fibres 30. The matrix is reinforced against radial loading by an inner set of metallic strength members 39 which preferably take the form of a wire or strip wound in a helix of relatively short pitch. Two layers may advantageously be used (Fig. 2a not shown). Tensile strength is provided by one or more, advantageously two, layers 34, 35, 53 of substantially longitudinal (slow-helical) wires embedded in the matrix radially outwardly of the inner strength members. In one embodiment of the invention (not shown), the optical fibres are loose laid in the central duct of the cable in a hydrophobic jelly or viscous liquid. In a second embodiment, preferred for depths of 6000 metres or more, the cable includes a central strength member, for example. an extruded copper rod 50, giving increased resistance to radial loading. The optical fibres are arranged in individual passages 51 around the central strength member and are surrounded by a hydrophobic jelly, a viscous liquid or a selected solid polymeric material. <IMAGE>
