Abstract

This invention provides a process for the flocculation of organic or inorganic matter, having a net negative electric charge thereon, in particular, to the flocculation and removal from a liquid of micro-organisms or cells, wastewater solids, insolubilised enzymes, xanthan gums, single cell protein, and inorganic compounds such as titania. The process comprises the steps of converting the net negative electric charge on a quantity of particles of a particulate material such as magnetite or sand into a net positive electric charge by adding a polyelectrolyte or flocculant, adding the so-treated particles to the suspension so that the suspended matter flocculates around and adheres to the particles, and separating the flocs, from the liquid, for example by electrostatic or magnetic means or by settling out by gravity. <IMAGE>
