Abstract

A direct current arc welding apparatus comprises a first rectifier (1) which is connected to a source of alternating current, a converter (2, 3) connected to the first rectifier (1), a second rectifier (4) connected to the converter (2, 3) a damping means (5) connected to the second rectifier (4) or one output terminal of the converter (2, 3), and a control unit (6) that controls the converter (2, 3) in dependence upon the welding current and voltage. Preferably the damping means (5) is formed by an inductance connectable in series with the welding electrodes and smoothing the welding current to damp the sound made by the arc during welding. <IMAGE>
