Abstract
Aqueous dispersions of water- insoluble or sparingly soluble optical brighteners containing from 4 to 20% by weight of one or more brighteners and from 10 to 50% by weight of one or more non-ionic dispersing agents of the general formula 1 <IMAGE> in which n is an integer of from 2 to 10, m represents a number of from 125 to 3,100, and R is the radical of a polyoxy- (C3-C6)-alkylene, a polyoxy-(C3-C6)- alkylated polyvalent alcohol, a polyoxy- (C3-C6)-alkylated C2-C10-alkylene diamine or of a novolak of the general formula <IMAGE> in which R1 is hydrogen or C1-C9-alkyl, and Y is an integer of from 1 to 9, with the proviso that the molecular weight of the radical R is in the range of from 1,000 to 10,000. The dispersing agents are made by treating various polyoxy compounds or novolaks with ethylene oxide according to known methods. The dispersions may also contain various additives and give enhanced brightness when applied to synthetic textile fibres, particularly in the pad-thermo-soling process.
