Abstract

201,709. Truscott, E. F. June 17, 1922. Lenses, grinding; block apparatus; disc apparatus.-A machine for producing spherical and like surfaces on lenses &c. comprises a number of spindles A arranged in circular formation and in tiers in a frame D, which is rotatable about a shaft E. The work is interposed between pairs of shaped tools, one of each pair fitting on to a taper spigot below each spindle, and the other being engaged by a downwardly projecting finger of an adjustable crank passing through the lower end of the corresponding spindle. Each spindle A is slidable through a wheel G, which is frictionally driven from a wheel F on the shaft E, and works in conjunction with a spring pressure-device HThe spindles A are journaled in 'brackets I pivoted on centres J and pressed inwards by springs O to keep the wheels F, G in mutual engagement. Levers K effect disengagement between these wheels. The frame B tends to assume the same speed of rotation as the shaft E but is retarded by a brake-band Q and weight-lever R. A pump V draws liquid carrying an abrasive from trays B<2>, B<3>, and delivers it to a stand-pipe W. According to the Provisional Specification, the rotation of the frame B provides a means whereby the grinding process may be conveniently observed.
