Abstract

A longwall mining machine is provided with driving means which comprise a pair of driving devices located respectively at opposite ends of the coal-cutting means and including respectively a pair of endless chains 4, 5 meshing with a track extending alongside a longwall conveyor along which the machine moves. With the coal- cutting means the machine includes a body portion and a pair of cutting heads on the body portion respectively at opposite ends thereof. Preferably the cutting heads are mounted on the body portion so as to be located beyond the outer end portions of the endless chains, and a pair of electric motors are mounted on the body portion respectively at the inner end portions of the endless chains to drive the chains. Preferably also the body portion is mounted at its ends on skids, and the endless chains mesh with the track adjacent to the skids. <IMAGE>
