Abstract

In the manufacture of oil-scraper piston rings comprising an expander spring (5) which is itself provided with oil-scraper edges or is mounted within a scraper ring, manufacturing tolerances which result in an unduly wide range of contact pressures are compensated by measuring the tangential force required to close the gap between the ends (6) and (7) of the expander spring, or the corresponding force for the assembly of spring and scraper ring, calculating a length correction based on the deviation of the measured value from a standard, and inserting a spacer (9) of appropriate length (b). The spacer (9) is freely movable in a pin (8) located by engagement of the end (8') between turns of the spring (5). <IMAGE>
