Abstract

The ends of two pieces of yarn (YU, YL) are spliced together by inserting them into opposite ends of a substantially cylindrical tunnel (27) within which they are subjected to an air jet to entangle them. At least one of the yarns is slackened slightly prior to or simultaneously with the air jetting. The distribution of twists inherent in spun yarns is changed in the region of the spliced joint by twists imparted to the yarns by the air jet. The resulting pieced-up yarn has a much smaller joint size than that obtained with conventional knotters, thus reducing the likelihood of yarn breakage in subsequent knitting or weaving.
