Abstract
The thermal buffer unit 8 comprises a heat pipe having a sealed heat pipe housing 20 and a thermal storage unit 22. The thermal storage unit is housed within the heat pipe housing and comprises a thermal storage unit housing 24 and a phase change material 26. The buffer unit may include a heat input surface 28, heat output surface 30 and wicking material 32, such that heat input into the buffer is transferred to a working liquid of the heat pipe and also to the phase change material of the thermal store. A plurality of thermal stores may be provided in the heat pipe, with permeable baffles (figures 9 and 11-12, 62) included to direct flow towards an end of the thermal stores nearest the heat output surface of the heat pipe. The thermal buffer unit mitigates problems of thermal ratcheting. A heat transfer system comprising one or more buffer units in combination with input area, output area and intermediate heat pipes is also claimed. A solar power generation system comprising a solar energy collector and a heat engine such as a Stirling engine being thermally connected by the heat transfer system is also claimed.
