Abstract
Conventional structures for use as, for example, drive shafts or rotors are generally of solid metal. A lighter weight structure, having at least equal transmission properties, could give better fuel efficiency. One tubular structure of the invention is constructed from a metal tube 25; an adhesive 19; layers 26 and 28 of resin-impregnated carbon, or graphite, fibers; and interposed layers 27 and 24 of woven fiberglass. The fibers 22 of layer 26 are at an angle of from 5 DEG to 20 DEG with respect to the axis of core 25. The fibers 20 of layer 28 are at the corresponding angle, but of opposite hand orientation. The layers are shaped such that when wrapped around the core 25 the thickness of the total wrap increases from each end of the core to a maximum in its central portion. The wrapped article is heat cured to give the final composite structure. <IMAGE>
