Abstract

A multi-stage process for combusting a fuel containing fixed-nitrogen chemical species so as to avoid, reduce or mitigate the conversion of the nitrogen therein to atmospheric pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, which process comprises mixing the fuel with at least one first oxidizing agent (e.g. air) so that the resulting mixture has an equivalence ratio <IMAGE> of at least 1.2. The resulting mixture is then partially combusted in at least one stage at a temperature in the range from 1950 to 2400 DEG K with a residence time of at least 0.01 second. The combustion products from the first stage are mixed with at least one second oxidizing agent (e.g. air) with an equivalence ratio not exceeding 1.0, the mixing conditions being such as to avoid temperatures exceeding 1750 DEG K. The second mixture of combustion products and oxidizing agent(s) is then completely combusted in at least one second stage at a temperature below 1750 DEG K.
